GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes have renounced their rights to their top 2020 draft pick after learning more about his bullying of a Black classmate four years ago.The team parted ways with Mitchell Miller after taking heat for selecting him in the fourth round earlier this month despite knowing of his 2016 assault conviction.Arizona acknowledged it knew about the incident when it selected Miller.President and CEO Xavier Gutierrez said discovering more about it, and the effect it had on bullying victim Isaiah Meyer-Crothers and his family led to this decision."We have decided to renounce the rights to Mitchell Miller, effective immediately," said Gutierrez in a press release. "Prior to selecting Mitchell in the NHL Draft, we were aware that a bullying incident took place in 2016. We do not condone this type of behavior but embraced this as a teachable moment to work with Mitchell to make him accountable for his actions and provide him with an opportunity to be a leader in anti-bullying and anti-racism efforts. We have learned more about the entire matter, and more importantly, the impact it has had on Isaiah and the Meyer-Crothers family. What we learned does not align with the core values and vision for our organization and leads to our decision to renounce our draft rights. On behalf of the Arizona Coyotes ownership and our entire organization, I would like to apologize to Isaiah and the Meyer-Crothers family. We are building a model franchise on and off the ice and will do the right thing for Isaiah and the Meyer-Crothers family, our fans, and our partners. Mr. Miller is now a free agent and can pursue his dream of becoming an NHL player elsewhere. The news comes after an extensive exposè of Miller's bullying Meyer-Crothers, who has developmental disabilities, back in Ohio, was published on Oct. 26 by the Arizona Republic.According to the Toledo Blade, Miller and another student were found delinquent on counts of assault and violating the Ohio Safe Schools Act.In court, Miller admitted that he and Hunter McKie made Meyer-Crothers "eat a candy push pop after wiping it in a bathroom urinal," the Toledo Blade reported back in 2016.Sylvania Schools suspended Miller after the incident.Miller becomes an NHL free agent effective immediately.According to ESPN, North Dakota head coach Brad Berry told the Grand Forks Herald that Miller was still part of their program. 2422

Historic numbers of background checks to purchase or possess a firearm have been conducted in June. It's just the latest month with record-breaking numbers since the system was created in 1998. The FBI reported Wednesday that 3.9 million checks were done last month in what's a key barometer of gun sales. The numbers are driven by the crises that have roiled the U.S., including the coronavirus pandemic, an economic recession, protests over racial injustice and calls to reduce police funding. A group representing gunmakers says firearm purchases are a reasonable reaction to the political climate, while gun control advocates say they're concerned first-time buyers don't have enough training. 705

Hackers who infiltrated the Twitter accounts of several high-profile politicians and industry titans over the summer posed as members of the Twitter IT department in order to steal the credentials of employees with high-security clearance, New York's Department of Financial Services says.On July 15, dozens of high-profile Twitter accounts — including those belonging to Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Jeff Bezos — were hacked and posted messages directing followers to give away bitcoin in a targeted scam. According to the DFS, hackers made off with about 8,000 in bitcoin. In the days following the hacking, Twitter said it believed that the scam was engineered by a "coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools." In its report, published Thursday, DFS confirmed that was the case.According to DFS, the scheme began on July 14, when at least one of the hackers called Twitter employees posing as members of Twitter's IT desk. Twitter employees have been working from home amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the company has often experienced issues with its Virtual Private Network. Seizing on that vulnerability, the hackers told the employees they needed to check on the VPN and directed employees to a phishing website that looked "identical" to Twitter's IT page. When the employees with advanced access entered their username and password, that information was immediately sent to the hackers. The next day, the hackers carried out their high-profile bitcoin scheme, which alerted Twitter to the hack and caused disruptions on the site for several hours. However, before carrying out the bitcoin scheme, the hackers also took control of so-called "OG" Twitter accounts — valuable account names designated by a single word, letter or number. If login credentials of those accounts are stolen, such they can be sold for thousands of dollars. In all, DFS says 130 Twitter accounts were hacked, and the suspects sent tweets from 45 of those accounts. The DFS said the hacking represented severe flaws in Twitter's security systems, which could have dire consequences."In the hands of a dangerous adversary, the same access obtained by the Hackers–the ability to take control of any Twitter users’ account–could cause even greater harm," the agency said. 2351

HILLSBORO, Ohio — A dramatic security recording from inside the Highland County Common Pleas Court shows an inmate fleeing his own sentencing hearing on foot, evading deputies in the process, on Tuesday morning.According to court records, 34-year-old Nickolaus Kyle Garrison had in August pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated possession of methamphetamine. He appeared in court Tuesday to receive a sentence of six months from Judge Rocky Coss. The Highland County Press reported Garrison ran when deputies attempted to take him back into custody after his sentencing. The video released by the county shows Garrison running from the courtroom and out into a hallway, pursued by deputies and a court bailiff. As he runs downstairs, the bailiff attempts to jump over the banister and grab him; the bailiff falls, sliding down the stairs on his back, and Garrison escapes.By the end of the week, Garrison was back in custody. He was captured at a motel in Clinton County around 4:30 a.m. Friday by officers and deputies from multiple law enforcement agencies. Garrison will now face additional charges. GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217
