SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported a record new 1,802 coronavirus cases on Friday, bringing the region's total to 78,159 cases thus far.The new cases resulted in an 8% positive rate out of 21,671 reported tests for the county's daily tally. No new deaths were reported on Friday, as the death toll sits at 996.The new case totals come as public and federal health officials urge the public to keep gatherings limited and small this Thanksgiving and not to travel.Hospitalizations in the county remained at 580 on Friday, while ICU cases rose slightly from 166 to 173 — both of which have nearly doubled since a month earlier, according to the county's data.There were 82 community outbreaks in San Diego County as of Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego lifeguards towed the remains of a beached whale from Blacks Beach to Fiesta Island Monday, hours after two whales were spotted off Orange County.Lifeguards found the grey whale on the shore about 11 a.m. It was towed from the Torrey Pines area to Mission Bay and arrived at 3:30 p.m.Experts with the National Marine Fisheries will perform a necropsy to determine why the whale died.The discovery came within an hour of a rare sighting in Seal Beach in Orange County.Two whales appeared to be stuck in one spot between a sandbar and the shoreline, near the end of the San Gabriel River Trail.Witnesses called California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials to check on the animals, KABC reported. 752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are reminding families who may care for an at-risk loved one to have a plan if they become lost.Officers said Saturday that a woman named "Lupe" disappeared from her home recently and was lost before a neighbor who noticed her called police.SDPD Southern Division officer McClain responded to the call and stayed with Lupe as other officers searched the area to try and get her back home, according to police. An officer eventually found a residence with an open door, which was Lupe's home.Instead of transporting her back home in a police vehicle, and possibly confusing or scaring the woman, SDPD said McClain, "figured it was time to get his steps in and walked Lupe back to her residence." There, she was reunited with her family.SDPD said the incident highlighted the need for families to make sure loved ones with medical or mental issues have an ID bracelet with their basic information, address, and emergency contact if they become lost.The Alzheimer's Association says families can prevent a loved one from wandering away from home by identifying times they are likely to wander and plan activities, ensure basic meets are met, use devices to signal when a door or window opens, and regularly supervise them. The group says families can plan for the possibility of someone wandering away from home by asking neighbors to call if they see the person alone, know where a person could likely go to if they leave the home alone, and familiarize themselves with the neighborhood and any possible hazards there may be. 1568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County District Attorney's office published an updated 25-year officer-involved shooting analysis Thursday. The study is said to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind released in the country.10News spoke to District Attorney, Summer Stephan at her office in Downtown San Diego. Her office is responsible for investigating all officer-involved shootings in the county. "We look at those reports with an eye as to whether there is criminal liability," Stephan said. Some notable statistics of the newly released study include:-Between 1993 - 2017, there were 451 officer-involved shootings in San Diego County (55% were fatal)-64% of shootings happened within 5 minutes of an officer arriving at the scene-79% of shootings involved a person who had drugs/alcohol in their system or had mental health issues-92% of subjects were armed with a weapon-There are an average of 18 officer-involved shootings per year-Most shootings occurred after traffic stops and domestic violence incidents-Most shootings happened at an alley/street-Most frequent time of day for a deadly encounter was the midnight hour on FridaysArmed with these new stats, Stephan's office is working with local agencies to reduce these shootings. She said it begins with re-training officers and dispatchers, but also teaching citizens how to call 911."What information is dispatch getting, to tell the officers about the individual's mental health condition, their delusions or history of violence or substance abuse?" Stephan said.The DA's office has already started to pass out 911 cards at community events. The card has a mental evaluation checklist when for when citizens call for help.They are also re-training dispatchers to recognize certain situations and ask the right questions so that they can relay accurate information to field officers. Officers are also getting additional crisis management and de-escalating tools to help them reduce the speed in which they react, or use non-lethal force.The idea: Knowledge is power.
