Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks.After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023

The land of the free gained almost 200 new members this week in Colorado, and to say they’re excited to become new US citizens is an understatement. “It’s been a lifelong dream to become a US citizen, and it just happened,” said Katrin Redford, a new US citizen originally from Germany. “I want to get a better life here,” said Samuel Rodriguez, who came to the US from MexicoShang Wu came to the US more than 40 years ago and is finally getting his citizenship. “It feels great. It’s honored and it’s the right thing to do for me,” he said. Their excitement is a reward after what can be a long, grueling process. Some people think it takes a little too long. “We’re seeing processing times that are published by US CIS online for the Denver field office in terms of 10 and half to 22 and a half months,” said Jennifer Kain-Rios. Kain-Rios is an immigration attorney. She says processing delays are a problem and it’s been getting worse. “Over the course of the past couple years, we have definitely seen naturalization applications taking much longer than they had in the past,” said Kain-Rios. The US Commission on Civil Rights recently discovered the same thing. “The report is intended to just bring attention to this issue. Our hope is that the US Commission on Civil Rights will be able share it with Congress and other stake holders to ensure that the issue can be addressed adequately,” said Alvina Earnhart US Commission on Civil Rights, Colorado Advisory Committee. Earnhart sits on the Commission’s Colorado Advisory Committee. She says the application processing delays are more than just an inconvenience. They’re affecting people’s rights. “When we held the hearing in February, one of the panelists pointed out if an individual did not submit an application by March of this year, that there was no chance that they would be able to participate in 2020 election,” said Earnhart. As for why there’s a backlog, there’s no simple answer. The commission’s report found a handful of possible reasons that include changing policies and inadequate resources. The USCIS says the problem is simply an increase in applications. “Processing times impact people in very real ways. I think the most significant concern for many people is a desire to be able to vote,” said Kain-Rios. That desire is so strong, people were registering to vote the second the citizenship ceremony was over. “It is very important to participate, in every country you know, not just here,” said Rodriguez. US Citizen and Immigration Services, which handles citizenship applications, says they’ve brought those long wait times down. “Well the average after this month, will be just under seven months and we do have some number of outlier applications that take longer, but one the average, we’re about seven months,” said Kristie Goldinger, the Colorado District Director with US Citizenship and Immigration Services. We confirmed the new processing times on USCIS's website. But, seven and a half months is still longer than the six months it’s supposed to take. A Florida woman is facing attempted murder charges after police say she told her four children to unbuckle their seat belts and then purposefully drove a minivan into a tree yesterday.Calicia Williams and the children, who are between 7 and 13 years old, were all injured in the crash, Ocala police said in a release.Williams was speeding and told the children to take off their seat belts and stretch out their hands before the crash, according to the release."The devil can't hurt you, he only hurts bad people," Williams said just before the crash, according to the police report, which cited a witness whose name was redacted.
