SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved gorilla has died at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens. The zoo says Zura, a 39-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was being treated for “long-term digestive issues” but her condition recently had worsened and she died Friday.Zura arrived in San Francisco in 1982 from the Columbus Zoo, where her grandmother was Colo. Colo, who died in 2017, was widely known as the first gorilla in the world to be born in captivity. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A small wildfire broke out Sunday morning near Vallejo (vuh-LAY'-ho) with flames coming dangerously close to homes and forcing a college to evacuate at the northeast end of San Francisco Bay.A live broadcast on KGO-TV shows the fire on both sides of Interstate 80 and homeowners using hoses on a hillside to try and fight it.The fire forced the freeway to close and the California State University Maritime Academy to issue an evacuation order.The wildfire halted traffic at the Carquinez Bridge toll booth as the freeway became shrouded in thick smoke.Vallejo is 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) south of Geyserville where a massive wildfire forced 180,000 people to flee their communities. 714
SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A vacant lot next to the College-Rolando area library has become a dumping ground for homeless people and their trash. Now neighbors are fed up and want the owners to do something about it."My house is not even this trashy," says Erin Webster, who visits the library every day. "I keep my house clean. I think we should keep this whole community clean."The lot, at 6650 Montezuma Road, is owned by 52 Blue Falcon LLC, an investment group. They've filed paperwork with the city to build a 4-story Holiday Inn Express on the property. They're still waiting for final city approval."Everybody's trying to get through this process as quickly as possible," says Jeannette Temple with the Atlantis Group, who is a consultant on the project.In the meantime, homeless people have broken through the fence blocking off the lot. There are piles of mattresses, food, tents, electronics and other garbage piled up on every side.Temple told 10News the owners hired a cleaning company to come this week and remove the trash. She also says they have contracted with a security company to come twice a day and kick out anyone who doesn't belong.She says they welcome the complaints from the community and the owners want to know when things aren't right."We appreciate their eyes and ears because we don't want anything bad to happen at the property either," says Temple.Temple says the owners hope to start construction on the hotel at the start of 2019 and it should take about 18 months to finish.City of San Diego representatives say there are ways people can report problem properties in their neighborhood. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A proposal to build a four-story, 48 unit apartment complex in Carmel Valley has riled some neighbors, to the point where hundreds of them have now signed a petition asking the San Diego City Council to abandon the project.The complex would be at 10211 Rancho Carmel Drive, just off the 15 Freeway near Ted Williams Parkway. It's less than a half-acre. Right now, a two-story parking structure sits on the plot of land.Plans from developer New Pointe Communities say they would build the complex on top of the parking garage, essentially creating a six-story building.People who live in the nearby Provencal community say it doesn't fit the neighborhood. They've started an online petition to stop it."That’s pretty tall, and that just doesn’t fit in" says Eric Von Waldner, who signed the petition."It’s going to take away our view, take away our privacy. There will be balconies looking right at us. I just don’t like the idea of it," he adds.Von Waldner says neighbors worry the added units will overwhelm the area's electrical, water and sewage grid.They also say it will cause traffic headaches at the signal light on Rancho Carmel Drive and Provencal Place."You got Starbucks over there. You got people that live in my community. If you add 48 more units, it’s going to be crazy," says Von Waldner.They plan to send the petition to District 5 City Councilmember Mark Kersey, asking for a new plan. The Council already has an agreement with New Pointe to sell the land.“A number of residents have contacted me about the proposed project on Rancho Carmel Drive, and I continue to welcome feedback from my constituents. Any redevelopment plans for the site will go through an extensive public process with numerous opportunities for input from the community,” Kersey said in a statement to 10News.According to Eric Edelmen, the chair of the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Council, the developer still has to submit a formal proposal to the city. They also have to ask for the area to be re-zoned to allow the extra units.Right now, Edelman says the land is only zoned for eight units.He says the last time they heard from New Pointe was at a November 14th meeting. The Community Council would have to approve the proposal first. Then it would need to pass through the Planning Commission and finally the full City Council. 2361
