A Waste Management worker’s act of kindness is bringing tears to the eyes of many people after video of it was posted to Facebook.Colette Kingston posted the Ring doorbell footage Wednesday, and it has since received hundreds of shares.Kingston wrote in the post that her mother fell at her Independence, Missouri, home in January while trying to roll her trash can back up the driveway. Across the country, more states are legalizing marijuana.Now, more people are opening up about getting high and getting behind the wheel.“I feel more focused than when I’m sober,” Caleb Occelin said of driving while under the influence of marijuana. “It eases my mind. It makes me focus on everything.”Others, however, say they know better than to mix cars and cannabis. “Do not smoke weed and drive,” said marijuana smoker Sam Lee. “We all know we can barely think straight instead of drive.”Now, a team of medical professionals is studying the dangers of smoking and driving.“There’s been increasing concern about the potential of public health impacts of people using cannabis while they drive or shortly after,” said Dr. Michael Kosnett of the University of Colorado Denver.Kosnett is teaming up with Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety on a study about the effects of cannabis while operating a motor vehicle.This study tests three focus groups: daily smokers, occasional smokers and non-smokers as they go through tests measuring reaction times, hand-eye coordination and short-term memory.More than a year into the study, the team has hit an unexpected road block: they can’t seem to find occasional smokers.“As for people who just used it occasionally, like on a weekly basis, that was probably less than one-fourth of the people,” Kosnett said.This study is still in process. Kosnett has not yet released the findings.Denver Police Sgt. Alan Ma, however, doesn’t need to know the results. He says he knows from working his nightly beat that driving high is dangerous.“Their perception and reaction times are delayed,” Ma said about people who drive while high on marijuana. An agency in Colorado that tracks avalanches hiked its danger level to "extreme" for a swath of the state, the highest level on its scale."Do not travel in the backcountry," the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said in a tweet Thursday. "Historic avalanches expected to valley floors."The extreme dangers are for Vail and Summit County, and the Sawatch, Gunnison and Aspen zones.Colorado has been with heavy snow and avalanches. Two deaths occurred there recently and an avalanche shut down a part of Interstate 70 and ruptured a natural gas pipeline.Spencer Logan, an avalanche forecaster with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said avalanches are "running bigger than the last 20 to 30 years" and in some cases bigger than the last 50 years. He expects avalanche dangers will be high through the weekend.He said the large amounts of snow that have fallen in short amounts of time have pushed slopes "closer and closer to the edge.""We're seeing more snow than we have for quite a few years."Logan said the forecasts are for areas outside town limits and the backcountry, and roads will be affected."Certainly these avalanches are having an impact on the highways," he said.The Colorado Department of Transportation will do what it can to reduce avalanche hazards and ski patrols will be on alert."Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.
