CHENGDU, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao visited quake-hit Sichuan Province over the weekend, showing concern for survivors and inspecting reconstruction work as winter set in.     It was Hu's second visit after the May 12 earthquake. BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese emergency chartered flights are expected to fly back home almost all the more than 3,000 mainland tourists stuck in riot-hit Thailand by Dec. 1. Four Chinese mainland carriers have sent nine planes to retrieve the tourists after Bangkok's international airport closed because of a protest.     Some 2,000 tourists had returned back home by noon, and another more than 800 would fly back late Sunday night or early Monday morning, according to the airlines. BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The 11th National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, China's top legislature, concluded its fifth session on Tuesday after passing new laws and international treaties.     It adopted an amendment to the fire control law and passed a law designed to protect state-owned assets from being illegally seized.     The session also ratified a bilateral treaty on extradition with Portugal.     The 21-article treaty was signed by Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui and Portuguese Foreign Minister Louis Amado in Beijing on Jan. 31, 2007.     The top legislature session also ratified an amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment, and the Protocol thereto on Matters Specific to Aircraft Equipment.     NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo said the legislature would continue working on an amendment to the country's law on food safety, which is being revised following a nationwide toxic milk scandal.     The session publicized a draft of amended law on earthquake prevention and disaster reduction to receive suggestions from all circles.     Wu Bangguo said at the session that to promote the judicial fairness and public supervision is a long-term task and called for more efforts in this regard.     He urged lawmakers to live up to their responsibilities to provide more useful and effective advices or suggestions to the top legislature, including those on macro-control of the economy.

DESTROYER WUHAN, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese naval fleet sailed into the Strait of Malacca on Monday after its departure from China's southernmost island province of Hainan on an escort mission against piracy off Somalia Friday afternoon.     The fleet sailed into Singapore Strait Monday morning after over 20 hours' voyage from the South China Sea and arrived at the Strait of Malacca. It is expected to reach the Indian Ocean Tuesday.     The convoy, which includes two of China's most sophisticated naval destroyers, DDG-169 Wuhan and DDG-171 Haikou, and a supply ship Weishanhu, is heading for the Gulf of Aden to join a multinational patrol in one of the world's busiest sea lanes where surging piracy endangers international shipping.
