SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made an unpublicized visit to a Poway Unified School District campus on Thursday. DeVos spent about two hours at the Design 39 campus in 4S Ranch, speaking to administrators, teachers, and students. "The questions she was asking kids was, 'Really, tell me about your learning, and what do you really enjoy about learning here? How has this helped you as a learner?'" said Megan Power, a teacher at the school and former Education Department fellow who helped arrange for the visit. DeVos is a polarizing figure in the Trump administration, partially for her stance on school choice. Opponents accuse her of wanting to pull money out of public schools to pay for private education.Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps posted pictures on Facebook after the visit. Some parents blasted the district for even hosting her. One woman said if she had known she would have protested outside. Another called DeVos dangerous to public education.Other parents disagreed, saying politics aside, her visit was an honor."Just the fact that she came here to visit, someone of that high a profile speaks volumes to the school," said Matt Kolker, who was picking up his son from Design 39 campus Friday. Power, who had told DeVos about Design 39 during her fellowship, said it was a great opportunity."If we want the secretary to have a better understanding of what's going on in schools, we have to be able to invite her and the team into schools," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber announced Wednesday that the ride sharing company has chosen San Diego to be part of the new Uber Rewards program.The program lets users earn points every time they use Uber or Uber Eats, and the loyalty program has four membership levels: Blue, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.Once customers sign up, they’ll begin to earn points. Users will earn one point for every eligible dollar spent on UberPool and Uber Eats, two points for UberX, UberXL, Select and WAV and three points for Black and Black SUV.Once you earn 500 points within six months, you’ll advance from Blue to Gold. At 2,500 points you’ll advance to Platinum. And at 7,500 points, you’ll advance to Diamond.According to Uber, customers will get added to their Uber Cash balance for every 500 points earned to use on rides and Uber Eats.Other benefits for higher membership levels include flexible cancellations, price protection, priority pickups and upgrades.Other cities included in the rollout of the program include Miami, New Jersey, Denver, Tampa, New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Atlanta. 1103
San Diego (KGTV)- An Escondido family discovers new challenges in caring for their newborn diagnosed with Spina Bifida. He's finally home after staying in the hospital for months. The parents share the biggest hurdle is his continued care during the Pandemic.In the first three months of his life, Baby Devin has experienced eight surgeries. Spina Bifida is a condition where his spine didn't fully close while in the womb."Devin is at a small percentage where he has Symptomatic Chiari, where it affects his ability to breath and swallow," says dad Jon Hoy.Now at five months, little Devin is home from the hospital with his parents and three brothers, but he requires 24-hour medical care."He has a trache in his throat, and then he has a ventilator that helps him breathe," says Hoy. "The same ventilators that have become so crucial during COVID-19. He has G-tube to help him eat in his stomach."Parents Jon and Erin Hoy say finding in-home care has been tough."These nurses need to be pediatric certified. They need to be trache certified and vent certified," says Mom Erin Hoy. "His level of acuity has just created a big barrier for finding nurses."Due to COVID-19, there is an added level of caution for those who are around Baby Devin. Hoy says during her search for adequate help, she's learned, "there's a significant difference or pay difference between nurses in a hospital or a facility compared to nurses in home."Hoy says they are still in need of nurses to help Devin around the clock, but they are grateful for the ones that have come in so far."There's always light that comes if you just hold on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use.
