BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- CT scan, a widely used heart-imaging test, is likely to result in the over treatment for patients with heart disease, according to a study published online by the Archives of Internal Medicine on Monday.CT, which produces a detailed image of the heart that reveals cholesterol buildups in the coronary arteries, is widely used in the hospital around the world."Testing might lead to more harm than good," said McEvoy, a doctor at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in S. Korea. His team led the study, in which 2,000 healthy adults were divided into two groups. One thousand adults had CT scans and another half had standard tests, including routine checks of their blood pressure and cholesterol levels. After 18 months, the 215 people who had worrisome CT scans were advised to have additional tests and medical treatment, and some even advised to have surgery. But less than 10 percent in the group of standard test were reported to need medications. Therefore, physicians cannot easily ignore the diagnoses made by the new imaging techniques, McEvoy said, "We are left with the dilemma of what to do with the results,"According to McEvoy, doctors should focus on patients' lifestyle and traditional risk factors such as smoking and obesity.

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. space shuttle Discovery landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, ending its nearly 27-year flying career as the world's most- traveled spaceship.According to NASA, Discovery touched down at 11:57 a.m. EST ( 1657 GMT) after a 13-day resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS)."For the final time: wheels stop," Discovery's commander Steven Lindsey called out as the shuttle rolled to a full stop.Discovery lifted off on Feb. 24 from the Kennedy Center and arrived at the space station on Feb. 26.During the mission, the astronauts installed a spare closet module on the space station, completed some important repairs and delivered the first humanoid robot, though it will need more time to be assembled and made operational. The 330-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands. Once it is unpacked -- likely several months after its arrival at the station -- it will initially be operated inside the Destiny laboratory for operational testing, but over time both its territory and its applications could expand.Aboard the station, its primary job for now is teaching engineers how dexterous robots behave in space. However, the hope is that through upgrades and advancements, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or additions to the station or perform scientific work.
BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has ordered a "serious investigation" into two kinds of bath products that reportedly gave children skin diseases. The order came after recent reports accused the body wash and lotion used by bathhouse chain Tian Po Po Xi Jiu Tang, or, literally, "Grandma Tian's Bathhouse," in southwest China's Sichuan Province of having "caused severe body damages," according to a SFDA statement released Tuesday. The bathhouse chain, with a history of some 70 years, was first established in Sichuan's capital Chengdu and was listed as a part of the city's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.The licensed bathhouse claimed to use bath products developed by its own Chinese herbal medicine recipes that protected children from various skin ailments and other diseases, such as eczema, colds, and constipation. However, an unknown number of children suffered pustular psoriasis, a chronic skin irritation characterize by raised bumps, after washing at the bathhouse chain and using the two products, according to reports.Sichuan's provincial food and drug administration bureau previously deemed the two products to be "fake drugs" based on an initial investigation by the local police and food and drug authorities, the statement said. The SFDA urged local food and drug supervision departments across the country to monitor and check the two products sold by the bathhouse chain within their regions, and vowed to punish any violations of laws and regulations.
