SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Video taken in Mexico shows dozens of migrants climbing over the border fence in Border Field State Park. The video, provided to 10News by Joebeth Terriquez Espinoza with AFN, a news agency in Mexico, shows people successfully climbing over the fence and onto the beach on the U.S. side of the border just after 4 p.m. A spokesperson for Border Patrol says agents arrested people as soon as they crossed, preventing anyone from getting away. A total of 24 people, 18 men and six women, were taken into custody. According to Border Patrol, 23 of the people who crossed the border illegally were from Honduras while the 24th person was from Guatemala. All 24 people arrested were taken to a nearby Border Patrol station for processing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With seniors across the state being told to stay “self-isolated,” local governments and non-profits are working to make sure basic needs are taken care of. Serving Seniors, a non-profit that serves meals to low-income seniors, says it has closed all of its senior centers and congregate meals. Instead, it has ramped up its home meal delivery operation and to-go services. “We have the capacity but it is causing some significant logistical challenges,” said Paul Downey, CEO of Serving Seniors. For those who would like to help, you can donate on their website. The County of San Diego is also working to connect isolated seniors with services they may need, including meal deliveries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many local events went on as planned this weekend, several conferences slated for San Diego have canceled or postponed due to coronavirus worries.So far, a handful of events have pulled back or canceled their plans:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say. Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The convention center says in addition to the cancellation, some organizers have contacted them about postponing their events until later this year. The community came together to clean up the site.The intersection of Euclid and Imperial Avenues was once known as the "Four Corners of Death" because of the high crime, gang activity, and homelessness. Now the area is getting some long-overdue attention."I remember when that area was bustling with businesses and commerce," says Brian Pollard, President of the Urban Collaborative Project.Since 2017, the Urban Collaborative Project has been working with community members, the city, and county to clean up the area and find help for those living on the streets.Brian Pollard says there has been an increase in affordable housing in the area, but resources like healthcare and food are still limited."We're putting more people in here but not increasing the services that are needed to support these affordable housing units. Food is a very big issue."The group's first significant project was bringing the Food 4 Less, located in Market Creek Plaza, to Southeast San Diego years ago. This part of town has virtually no major grocery stores."Until we start acknowledging that and pumping resources and shifting priorities, we will never catch up," says Pollard.UCP hopes to redevelop the Lincoln Park area, near Euclid and Imperial Avenues, to see it thrive as it did years ago, inviting businesses to invest in the process.The group is planning a community clean up in the coming weeks to beautify the area. 1491
