The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the hospitality industry has been among the hard-hit during the coronavirus pandemic. But some are using the pandemic to test out new adventurous revenue streams amid the pandemic. With the industry severely impacted, there is an opportunity for hotels to monetize its space.HotelsByDay, a company that allows customers to use hotel rooms during daytime hours, lost 80% of its business during the height of the pandemic. But as many workers are unable to return to the office, some are booking rooms as officers. The company is now down 40%, with many clients booking rooms for work purposes.“It would be a lot more adventurous and can really test out every single possibility to monetize their hotel,’ Yannis Moati, the CEO of HotelsByDay said. “Not just with rooms, but with every single corner of the hotel.”According to the BLS, nearly half of all hospitality industry jobs were lost in April, with hotels losing 0 million a day. Six out of 10 hotel rooms were empty early in July. 1035

The global pandemic has changed what “work” looks like for millions of people, and those changes could become permanent, according to workplace and hiring experts. In a report from Glassdoor looking at job trends in 2021 they remind people that moments of crisis, like the coronavirus pandemic, can present risks and opportunities. Some companies have already announced long-term work-from-home opportunities, are embracing mental health and culture-building initiatives, and are scaling back in-person meetings and positions that are in-person focused.Part of the report focused on jobs Glassdoor predicts will either not exist or will be drastically different in the future because of the pandemic. In 2021, lower-skilled service jobs, education jobs, administrative office roles, sales roles and discretionary healthcare jobs could start disappearing. These findings are based on job listings from October 2019 to October 2020, and noticing trends of decreasing job postings during the pandemic that do not show signs of bouncing back. Some of those jobs specifically include beauty consultants, valets, pet groomers, event coordinators, executive assistants, receptionists, sales product demonstrators, product or brand ambassadors and even sales managers. In education, the higher ed system “is facing an overwhelming financial crisis due to falling enrollment and mandated campus closures, and these jobs may not return for a long time.” That includes college professors and instructors, according to Glassdoor. In healthcare, while frontline workers like doctors and nurses are in high demand, other positions are not as some health needs are being postponed or canceled altogether. Jobs for audiologists, opticians and physical therapists are all down. They do predict that jobs like nursing, warehouse worker and e-commerce sector jobs will continue to increase in number in 2021.This lines up with a recent report from the World Economic Forum that predicted about 85 million jobs around the world would become obsolete by 2025 because of the rapid change to automation and remote work during the pandemic. The WEF report also focused on jobs that will rise in the wake of the pandemic. According to the report, by 2025, roles and jobs that leverage human skills will rise in demand.Machines will primarily be focused on information and data processing, administrative tasks and routine manual jobs. The WEF says emerging professions in the next several years will be in data and artificial intelligence, content creation and cloud computing. They also say employers will be looking for these top skills among their employees: analytical thinking, creativity and flexibility. The report from Glassdoor also looked at workplace benefits and initiatives that employees will begin to expect from an employer post-pandemic and how salaries could be impacted by permanent work-from-home changes. 2898

The former Louisville Metro Police Officer charged with wanton endangerment for firing his gun into Breonna Taylor's apartment pleaded not guilty during a Monday arraignment. Brett Hankison and his lawyer participated in the arraignment remotely. The former officer pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces. The judge made two stipulations during Monday's arraignment: Hankison has to attend every court hearing, even if it is remotely, and second, Hankison cannot have any firearms. His attorney pushed back, arguing Hankison might need a weapon to protect himself after recent threats. The judge declined the objection. Hankison was charged by a grand jury with three counts of wanton endangerment last week. Of the three officers who fired their weapons that night in March when Taylor was killed, Hankison was the only one charged as a result of the grand jury investigation. Officers were at Taylor's apartment in the early morning hours of March 13 to serve a narcotics warrant in connection with an investigation into an ex-boyfriend. Taylor's current boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, says he did not hear police announce themselves, and says he fired a "warning shot" toward the front door as police broke down the door. Police returned fire. Taylor was shot several times and later died. An autopsy recently released reveals more details about the deadly shot. Hankison is charged with firing several rounds into the building following the initial shootout, allegedly putting Taylor's neighbors in danger. Hankison faces a maximum of 5 years in prison if found guilty. He was fired from the police department in June. In a press conference following the grand jury's announcement, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said two other officers, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, were "justified" in using lethal force because they had been fired upon first. The two officers and Hankison are also facing an internal police investigation into the shooting. Mattingly and Cosgrove remain on administrative duty. The decision not charge officers with Taylor's homicide has prompted protests in Louisville and throughout the country. 2148

The caravan of Central American migrants going through Mexico to the US border isn't ending. Instead, its participants will disperse into smaller groups after reaching Mexico City. While some will stay in Mexico to try to get refugee status there, others will continue north to the US border.Organizers of the caravan estimate that some 200 or so people will proceed all the way to the US border in the coming days, although the number could be higher. Last year, about 150 went all the way to the border, they said. 523

The first large head-to-head comparison of two opioid addiction medications found that, although they were equally effective in getting people off of high levels of opioids, users had a significantly more difficult time starting a regimen of naltrexone, compared with buprenorphine.Buprenorphine is commonly known by the the brand name Suboxone, and naltrexone is sold under the brand name Vivitrol. The study, published Tuesday in the Lancet, looked at 570 patients with opioid addiction at eight inpatient treatment centers across the country for 24 weeks. Half of the group was assigned to naltrexone and the other half to bupenorphine.Six percent of those enlisted to use buprenorphine were unable to start their treatment, whereas 28% of those assigned to naltrexone dropped out before starting the therapy. 824
