SANTA ANA (CNS) - Orange County health officials reported a record number of coronavirus cases for the second consecutive day Sunday, announcing 434 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two additional deaths.The numbers bring the county's totals to 10,422 cases and 269 deaths, and follow Saturday's reporting of 413 newly confirmed cases and 10 deaths.The Orange County Health Care Agency said last week was the county's deadliest since the pandemic began, with 55 COVID-19 deaths reported between June 13-19.The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus rose from 321 to 332, with the number of patients in intensive care dropping from 135 to 133.A total of 212,113 people have been tested for the virus, with 789 tests reported Sunday.There have been 4,953 documented recoveries, according to the OCHCA.The total number of Orange County cases break down to 50% men and 50% women, but men account for 57% of the deaths.Santa Ana leads all county cities with 2,189 cases, followed by Anaheim with 2,007. Their high numbers are attributed to large populations and the presence of multiple nursing homes in both cities. (KGTV) — Flames sparked in heavy brush in a Santee riverbed on Thursday, spreading dangerously close to several homes.The three- to four-acre brush fire was reported off Mission Gorge Rd. and Fanita Dr. just after 12 p.m. Sky10 video showed flames in the brush behind homes along Willowgrove Ave.At least one helicopter responded to the fire and quickly began making water drops, pulling water from the San Diego River nearby. Several firefighters were also on the ground spraying the flames from behind homes.One firefighter has been injured, though the severity of their injuries was unclear.San Diego Sheriff's Department said seven or eight homes need to be temporarily evacuated, but should be able to return home since the fire has been contained.SDSO closed Carlton Hills Blvd. between Mission Gorge Rd. and Carlton Oaks Dr. while crews fought the blaze.Crews are expected to be in the area into the night to mop up the area. 955

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Marcos man had to rush his small dog to the hospital after the animal was bitten by a rattlesnake that somehow managed to get into the home.Ross Margolin says he came home to feed his five dogs when he heard the dogs in the other room barking at something.When he walked into the kitchen, he says he heard the unmistakable rattle. Margolin quickly called a company that specialized in getting snakes out of the house.The man who came to collect the rattlesnake was able to quickly get the two and a half foot long reptile out of the home. Margolin says he later noticed one of his dogs was bitten by the snake.Fortunately, Margolin says his dog quickly recovered after being rushed to the animal hospital for treatment. Margolin says the snake was able to get into the home through an open sliding door.  857

(CNS) - The Golden State Killer will hear testimonials from many of the women he raped beginning Tuesday and through Thursday, when Orange County's victims will have their say.Victim impact statements in the sentencing for Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., 74, begin Tuesday morning with his many rape victims when he was known as the Visalia Ransacker and then later as the East Area Rapist and original Night Stalker.DeAngelo admitted his guilt June 29 in a string of murders, rapes and other crimes in the 1970s and 1980s, stretching from Sacramento County to Orange County. He pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder and murder during the commission of rape, robbery and burglary, 13 counts of kidnapping to commit robbery with sentencing enhancements for the use of a gun and a knife.DeAngelo also admitted in his plea deal to crimes for which he could no longer be peosecuted because of a statute of limitations -- such as attempted murder, kidnapping to commit robbery, rape, robbery, first-degree burglary, false imprisonment and criminal threats. 1085

Say goodbye to emotional-support animals in airplane cabins. The Transportation Department issued a final rule Wednesday covering service animals. The rule says only dogs can qualify, and they have to be specially trained to help a person with disabilities. "This final rule defines a service animal as a dog, regardless of breed or type, that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. It allows airlines to recognize emotional support animals as pets, rather than service animals, and permits airlines to limit the number of service animals that one passenger can bring onboard an aircraft to two service animals," the final rule states. Those traveling with a service dog will be required to fill out a form from the DOT "attesting to the animal’s training and good behavior, and certifying the animal’s good health" before flying. For years, some travelers have been bringing untrained dogs and all kinds of other animals on board by claiming they need the animal for emotional support. Airlines believe some passengers were avoiding pet fees by calling their pets emotional-support animals. The DOT proposed the change earlier this year and received more than 15,000 comments on the proposal, they said in a press release. The new rules take effect in 30 days. 1430
