SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Another migrant caravan has reportedly formed and is making its way through Mexico, according to Pedro Rios, the director of the American Friends Service Committee. Rios said the group has more than 2,600 people and is picking up more along the way. Like past caravans, it is fleeing violence from countries of violence, and Rios believes many will likely try to reach the U.S. border to make an asylum plea. “It includes not only Central Americans from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, but also Cubans and people from Venezuela and various African countries,” Rios said. “There is definitely a lot of families, in fact, they’re moving at the pace of families.” Rios said networks of humanitarian and human rights groups are watching the caravan. The group entered Southern Mexico and is headed towards Mexico City. From there, the caravan could decided to head up towards the Tijuana, San Diego portion of the border, or head towards Texas. 10News reached out Customs and Border Protection officials after hours Tuesday, asking if they are aware of the caravan and what preparations they are taking. YouTube star Brooke Houts is the subject of a police investigation over a video that appears to show her abusing her Doberman.Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Cervantes said the department's animal cruelty task force is looking into the matter but didn't offer further details.Houts posted the video to her YouTube channel, which has more than 330,000 subscribers. The video has since been taken down, though it's unclear whether that was done by her or by YouTube.However, viewers shared the video on social media, where it drew widespread criticism.In the 50-second video, Houts says she is attempting to prank her dog. "I put plastic wrap on the door. I'm gonna have him run out," she says. "We're just gonna see what he does."The video cuts, and Houts is then heard asking, "it doesn't faze you?" The dog jumps on her chest, and she responds by slapping him across the face.Later, Houts gets closer to the camera and engages in another altercation with the dog. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The clock is ticking as family members of Suzanne Johnson wait to see if Governor Jerry Brown will grant clemency before he leaves office Monday. Six-month-old Jasmine Miller died while under the care of Johnson at her home daycare center in North Park in 1997. Johnson found guilty of assaulting Jasmine and sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors argued Johnson was frustrated by the baby's crying, pointing to the accepted signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome: Bleeding behind the eyes, and bleeding and swelling in the brain."We've seen a major shift in the science of Shaken Baby Syndrome," said Mike Semanchik, managing attorney with the California Innocence Project at California Western School of Law.According to Semanchik, "based on the science we know now, the jury at the time would not have found Suzanne Johnson guilty." Medical consensus now says those telltale signs of shaken baby syndrome can be caused by various medical conditions and accidental falls from short heights.Johnson says Jasmine fell out of her high chair but seemed okay, before becoming unresponsive hours later."The evidence supports an equal theory for a fall, as it does for an intentional act," said Semanchik.The science has not been enough to persuade the courts. All appeals for a new trial have been rejected."Missing her has been pretty horrific," said Sharon Johnson, Suzanne's daughter-in-law. She describes her mother-in-law as a loving woman who has remained positive, leading bible study and other groups in prison. That's a 65 percent raise; it increases to 5,000 on Dec. 10, 2022.The timing may seem odd, given the pandemic's impact on jobs and our economy, and the fact that major city general fund revenues are projected to be about million under budget this fiscal year. But it turns out San Diego voters authorized these pay increases back in 2018 via Measure L, which voters passed with 78 percent approval.In a statement, a spokeswoman for Gloria said he would accept the full salary."Nearly 80 percent of San Diego voters agreed that the adjustments to the salaries of San Diego elected officials was the right thing to do.
