In states where it is legal, dispensaries are the go-to location for marijuana products. But now, more customers are using a marijuana home delivery service. Marijuana delivery is a growing business in California, with a company called Eaze dominating the marketplace. Its web page connects customers to dispensaries. Customers can choose from a variety of products, including flower, vape pens, body creams and more. Then, it gets delivered straight to the customer’s door. "A lot of times it gets there faster than a pizza," says Sheena Shiravis, Eaze’s director of consumer communications. Eaze's website looks like a typical online store. "You add things to your cart just like you would on Amazon,” Shiravi explains. “Anything like that. You check out, and then you get an ETA with when your driver is going to arrive." Eaze's software uses an algorithm to help dispensaries and drivers anticipate what customers will buy throughout a day. The product and drivers are tracked by GPS for security and safety. "There's little things like alerts that the driver has been sitting still or idle for 15 minutes, the dispatcher can instruct the retailer and will get an alert so they can call the driver,” Shiravi says. Delivery drivers must have clean driving records. They also have a host of safety procedures to follow. "The cars are not branded. The drivers don't wear cannabis clothing,” says Elissa Hambrecht, CEO of Fume, a dispensary. “There's nothing that says Eaze.com on it. It's literally a soccer mom car." There is some controversy in California and other states that are considering marijuana delivery. Some worry this will make increase crime. "We've seen shootings; we've seen homicides,” says Sgt. Scott Pendleton with the Colorado Police Department in Aurora. “A great deal of violent crime that surrounds marijuana." Sgt. Pendleton, who is a narcotics officer, worries about customers and drivers being sitting ducks for robbers. States that have a marijuana home delivery service include California, New York, Florida, Maine and Oregon. Other states are considering allowing the service, including Colorado and Washington. "You don't know what's going to take place, where there is going to be a rip off that's set up,” Sg. Pendleton says. It's hard to measure whether marijuana delivery has impacted crime where delivery is legal. However, Shiravi believes it’s helped cut down on black market sales. "Delivery helps eliminate the black market, because you are providing a legal channel for access," Shiravi says. She says drivers almost never have a problem with crime."Less than one .001 percent in over the 3 million deliveries that we've made," she says. 2692

In the battle between the adolescent penchant for hitting the snooze button and parental desire to rush them onto an early morning school bus, experts say science is increasingly siding with the snooze. The biological clock of teens is shifted, Dr. Mary Carskadon, director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Research Lab at EP Bradley Hospital, told CNN. That means everything influenced by the circadian timing process, including sleeping, waking and eating patterns are set later. And if teens have trouble naturally falling asleep at an early hour and don't get the recommended eight and a half to nine hours of sleep, asking them to be awake, ready and in a classroom by 7:30 a.m. can wreak havoc on their systems, Carskadon said.Students in one state have gotten a reprieve from the early morning blues. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Sunday that pushes back start times for middle and high schools to align with teens' circadian rhythms. It's a move sleep experts hope more school districts will follow. That's especially because research suggests that when teens get a later start in the morning, they can do a better job of checking off the things on many parents' priority lists like:Paying attention and getting their homework doneFour out of five public middle and high schools in the US start before 8:30 a.m., the earliest time recommended for teens, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.Carskadon says the negative consequences of early waking on academic performance are obvious: Students have more trouble concentrating in class and retaining information, feel tired during the day, have more absences and tardiness and have a hard time doing their homework and class reading well. There isn't enough time between when their clocks tell them to go to sleep and when they need to be in class to get the sleep they need, she says. And to make matters worse, for many teens, their bodies are telling them it's still time to be in bed when they are trying to listen in class."A lot of kids will just be asleep in first period because their brains are -- almost literally -- on the pillow and not yet in the classroom," she said.Avoiding the junk foodWhen students are off of their regular sleep cycle, they often also fall off of their ideal eating cycle too, Carskadon said. Since the biological clock influences humans' eating, straying from the circadian rhythm could mean eating too much or eating the wrong food at the wrong times, she said.Who among us reaches for a healthy snack when we are tired and awake when we aren't supposed to be, asked Stacy Simera, a licensed social worker who is chair of the sleep committee for the Ohio Adolescent Health Partnership. That disruption not only means worse nutrition, but it can lead to an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, Carskadon said.Staying out of troubleWhen it comes to impulse control, Carskadon and her colleagues say teenagers already have the accelerator pushed down without any breaks. That's because the emotional side of the brain is well developed in those years, but doesn't have a very strong link to the executive decision-making side. And neuroimaging studies showed that link is even weaker in teens without enough sleep. The result can be trouble controlling their impulses and increasingly engaging in risky behaviors like foregoing helmets, driving under the influence and abusing substances, Carskadon said.Keeping happy and safeFrom a physical health perspective, teens who get adequate sleep also are shown to suffer fewer car accidents and sports injuries, said Simera. She says teens fall asleep easiest and get the best quality sleep from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. -- the sweet spot. And research shows that straying from that sweet spot and sleeping less is correlated to depression, anxiety and suicide, she said. One study found that for each extra hour of sleep adolescents get, 3899

In the midst of a government shutdown caused by a budget battle over border security funding, President Donald Trump is telling officials and lawmakers he won't sign a bill that comes to his desk with only .3 billion allotted for border security, according to sources involved in the negotiations.A White House official said Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer did not immediately reject the offer the White House made last Saturday night, which included more than .3 billion but less than the billion Trump initially wanted. But during a call this week, Schumer informed the White House that they do not expect to accept or counteroffer the White House's proposal, a second official added. A Schumer spokesperson provided this readout of that meeting: "The Vice President came in for a discussion and made an offer. Unfortunately, we're still very far apart."Asked on Sunday if the President will sign or veto a bill that Democrats pass, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" that "it depends what's in it," but added that Trump is "ready to negotiate.""He wants to make a deal on border security. Where are they now? Nancy Pelosi is in Hawaii," Conway said. "And negotiation by definition has to include both sides. He's in the -- he's in the White House. He's in Washington ready to negotiate."The President likes the .6 billion that was in the House package," Conway said. "His incoming acting chief of staff and his vice president have offered less than that as a compromise. We have heard nothing in return."As far as the type of border security Trump is looking to get funded in a deal goes, Conway did not offer specifics but told Bash that "it's anything -- it's all of the above."During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly insisted that Mexico would fund the wall. Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell said he will not bring a vote to the floor unless the President has endorsed it."We pushed the pause button," McConnell said the day the government was scheduled to partially close, "until the President, from whom we will need a signature, and Senate Democrats, from whom we will need votes, reach an agreement."Trump, who has remained in Washington over the Christmas holiday after canceling a vacation to his private Florida club, is scheduled to have lunch with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on Sunday. Graham told Bash on the same program that he hoped to end the shutdown by offering Democrats incentives to get them to vote for wall funding."Democrats are not going to give us any money for a wall, border security, without getting something themselves," Graham said.Trump's outgoing chief of staff John Kelly, who has been largely uninvolved in the shutdown negotiations, 2756
