SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Siblings are frantically searching for their missing mother, after she walked out of Hospital Angeles in Tijuana Friday afternoon, according to her family.Jessica Puente, 73, accompanied her daughter, Johnica, for a surgery. When Johnica woke up, her mother was gone. "First thing I was like where's my mom, where's my mom? And they were like we don't know where she went," Johnica said.After questioning staff, a security monitor revealed Jessica walked out while speaking with the security guard at 11 a.m. Jessica asked the guard where to exchange money, Johnica said. She thinks her mom was going to find something to eat."We'll leave no stone unturned in Tijuana," her brother said Sunday night. He and their other brother flew into San Diego over the weekend, from their Seattle home, to help with the search."We tried to call the consulate but they're closed, we um called all these hospitals, we even went to the morgue, they went to the morgue this morning to see if there are any unidentified bodies," Johnica said they filed a police report with San Diego PD, passed out fliers in Mexico and have been using their connections to churches to spread the word.Johnica described her mother as shy, and says when she gets tired, she can get a little confused. She said her mother liked to dress up with flowers in her hair, jewelry, "her jacket and her shoes, she always liked to match, even though she's almost 73." Jessica is not only a mother of three, but grandmother to a little boy and girl, both under 10-years-old.When we asked how Johnica was able to stay so calm while talking about her mother's disappearance, she replied, "I don't know I just believe that she'll come up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since a movie theater was first added to Horton Plaza in 1985, San Diegans downtown have had cinema options at their fingertips.That is, until the plaza fell on tough times, as business slowed and patrons gained more options for retail and entertainment downtown.The trend has now reached the plaza's Regal movie theater, which closed its doors this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santa Ana winds have fueled the most destructive wildfires in San Diego’s history, including the Cedar Fire in 2003 and the Witch Creek Fire in 2007.But why do Santa Anas form and what makes them so effective at spreading fire?Typically, during the day, San Diego’s winds blow from the ocean to the shore. These onshore winds tend to carry a lot of water vapor.However, Santa Ana winds blow the opposite direction, from the east to the west, and they have all the ingredients fires need to spread.“Strong winds,” said National Weather Service San Diego meteorologist Philip Gonsalves. “They’re typically very dry, and we usually end up with warmer conditions.”Strong. Dry. Hot. A fourth key factor elevating the fire danger is the timing of this wind pattern.“They typically occur in the fall, which is that time of the year when the fuel moistures are very low, and so the fuels are primed for ignition,” Gonsalves said.Winds flow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Santa Anas form when there is high pressure over the Great Basin, located in Nevada and parts of Utah, and low pressure over Southern California.The winds are coming from the desert, but that’s not why they’re hot. They are hot for the same reason that air coming out of a bicycle pump is hot, Gonsalves said. It’s because the air is getting compressed.As the winds flow west out of the Great Basin, they travel over mountains. At high elevations, the air is very cool, but as the winds move downslope into lower elevations where the pressure is higher, the air gets compressed. That compression rapidly drives up the temperature in what’s called the Adiabatic Process.This process also dries out the air, and dry air can heat up much faster.As the winds move downslope, they pass over ridges and through canyons, which act like funnels, speeding up the winds.Santa Ana winds can pop up any time the Great Basin is cooler than Southern California, typically from September to May. But peak season is considered to be October.The Santa Ana event on Tuesday is falling a little before the peak season because of the positioning of highs and lows in the Northern Hemisphere, Gonsalves said, but the end result is the same: strong, dry, warm winds and extreme fire danger. 2281

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State health officials are working to catch up on a large backlog of COVID-19 tests.According to Marik Ghaly, California'sCalifornia's Health and Human Services Secretary, a server outage on July 25 led to a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system.Ghaly says they also realized they weren't getting data from one of their largest commercial labs for five days, between July 31 and August 4, because the state neglected to renew a certification."We apologize. You deserve better. The Governor demands better of us,"" Ghaly said during a Friday virtual news conference.Ghaly says there are an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 tests that need to be processed, and that will happen in the next 24 to 48 hours.The system accepts results for other reportable diseases, so the records have to sorted, Ghaly said, though adding that a majority will be COVID-19 test samples."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250 to 300 thousand cases will be resolved giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly said. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."Ghaly points out the state froze the county monitoring list last week, so the problem should have affected any decision-making policies. He also says it doesn't change any state trends with case rates, which he says are still trending downwards slightly.However, it's unclear how the delay in reporting will impact contact tracing.The Governor has ordered an investigation into the error. 1629
