Sandbox Pizza in Pacific Beach is an example of a restaurant stuck in limbo while helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. This past weekend, they held an event offering , 14-inch pizzas to all customers. "It's trying times for everyone so we figured it was something fun and the least we could do to try and help everyone out, from families that are out of work, to industry employees, to our first responders," Yankle added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders are asking the state to provide guidance on how the city can reopen the convention center safely during the pandemic.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmember Chris Cate signed on to the letter requesting that Gov. Gavin Newsom provide rules to reopen the convention center, which has been shuttered since March.According to the city, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the convention center has lost out on more than 100 events between March and December of this year. That factors out to a loss of about 7.8 million in direct attendee spending and .2 billion regional impact.Cate says guidelines to safely reopen convention centers have been awaiting Newsom's approval since June, and must be approved by November in order to host events in 2021 — many events that are already in jeopardy."We are respectfully requesting that the Governor approves the Safe Reopening Guidelines for convention centers statewide. These guidelines were submitted to his office in June. When conventions can reopen is just as critical as how they will be allowed to resume, and the state should be proactive in approving these guidelines well in advance. The property was transformed into a temporary shelter for the city's homeless population. Since April 1, about 1,100 individuals experiencing homelessness have been sheltered at the center per day. The city says that through its Operation Shelter to Home program, it has helped 525 people find housing to transfer into support housing, longer-term housing, rentals, living with friends or family, or rapid rehousing.Recently, the city also purchased two hotels — a Residence Inn on Hotel Circle and a Residence Inn in Kearny Mesa — to transform into housing units with supportive services as another method to bring individuals off the street. 2442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have released video footage after officers shot and killed a murder suspect following a standoff on May 29.The 32-year-old suspect who was shot and killed was accused of shooting and killing another man at a City Heights apartment complex.The video shows officer stationed outside the apartment complex. Watch the full video below:According to police, gunfire was reported at the complex on the 3800 block of Euclid Avenue around 3:30 p.m.Officers later found a 62-year-old Hispanic man with at least one gunshot wound. Three officers fired their weapons at the suspect, striking him several times," a San Diego Police Department statement said. "Specially trained STAR medics deployed with the SWAT team to provide aid, but the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County farmers are finding innovative solutions to problems brought on by climate change."It's getting hotter and drier, and we're in longer, more frequent droughts," says Al Stehly, who manages 15 farms in the North County. "So we have to use the water we do have better."Stehly says water is the biggest concern as temperatures rise."It's just going to get hotter and drier," he says. "So we've got to squeeze everything out of that sponge that we can without depleting the resource."The County Farm Bureau agrees, saying it's up to farmers to get creative when they plant. The farming industry is a .7 billion business in San Diego."We are forced to adapt," says Farm Bureau Executive Director Hannah Gbeh. "Facing global climate change, our farmers come up with the most innovative solutions possible."One solution found in many farms is increasing density in their fields. Stehly has moved some of his trees to just a few feet apart. That lets him water more trees with the same amount of water. It also puts more shade on the ground, which helps control evaporation. He says his grapefruit grove that usually produces 7-800 boxes per acre is now up to 1300 boxes.He's also cutting the trees shorter, which makes harvesting easier. And he's replaced some of his "high-water" crops like avocados with plants that use less water, like grapes and coffee."We have to use as little water as possible and still produce a healthy crop," says Stehly.But the most significant change, says Stehly, has been in technology. He recently added a sensor system to his farms that help him track tree growth, soil moisture, and more.All the information goes into an app, which tells him which areas of the farm need water, and which don't. He says that can help him know what areas to water, when to water and how much water to use."We can skip irrigations. We can skip days," Stehly says. "When you add that up over the course of a year, it's thousands of dollars and hundreds of thousands of gallons of water."The Farm Bureau says the industry can also help solve the climate crisis."The future of ag is the solution to climate change," says Gbeh. "We need to plant more trees. We need to sequester more carbon. Nothing sequesters carbon better than an avocado tree. Here in San Diego, we can be the solution."But, Gbeh says, that can only happen if water costs and regulations are low enough to encourage more planting. 2449
