SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Trans closed down a section of southbound I-5 Thursday night.The closer started at 9:30 p.m. from the I-805 split to La Jolla Village Drive.The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. Friday.Crews shut down the section of freeway due to necessary work on the construction of a trolley overpass over the interstate. Teams needed to bring heavy equipment onto the freeway to pour concrete onto the structure.Overnight and early morning commuters that take I-5 SB is being rerouted to I-805 SB and will need to use Highway 52 or I-8 to cut over.Crews say they will need to do follow up work within on the overpass in the next few weeks, so drivers should expect the same closure again. 716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Commuters trying to avoid traffic along the 56 in Carmel Valley are using side streets, worrying people who live in the Pacific Highlands Ranch neighborhood."It's the worst between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning," says longtime resident Randy M. She lives in the Portico West part of the development and says she sees cars going 50-60 miles an hour down her block every day."Sometimes, if I'm walking my dog, they'll almost run me over," she says. "So I have to be really careful."The traffic is coming from State Route 56. When that backs up, people will use Carmel Valley Road as an alternative. But that gets jammed as well, leading some drivers to turn into the neighborhood and use side streets and alleys.Making traffic worse, a half dozen schools are in the area (see map above) and all of them start between 8 and 8:40 am."It's a nightmare," says Naz Nahani, who drives her daughter to Pacific Trails Middle School every morning."When you reach this area, you're pretty much at a stand still," she says.The Carmel Valley Planning Board has held a pair of meetings about the issue. Chairman Frisco White says they're trying to find a solution."If the streets are private, we may look into blocking them from traffic during the morning," he says. They've also looked into placing no turn signs on Carmel Valley Road to discourage drivers from entering the neighborhood.Another option that White has heard would be to ask the school districts to further stagger the start times, so the traffic will be spread out over a longer period of the morning.White says the problem may get worse before it gets better, as hundreds of new apartments and homes are being built in the area.Nahani thinks the city should add more lanes to SR-56 and to Carmel Valley Road."We're planning to move closer to the school because of this," she says. 1864
