TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met late Monday with executives of major Japanese media, urging media of both countries to make due contributions to the advancement of Sino-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that both Chinese and Japanese media need to adopt a responsible attitude to report issues concerning bilateral relations and situations of their respective countries in line with the principle of authenticity, objectivity and comprehensiveness in a bid to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.     The media should also proceed from the general situation of Sino-Japan relations to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, focusing more on news reports that are beneficial to closer bilateral cooperation and providing more information that is conducive to China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations, he said.     Exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two nations, such as "Beijing-Tokyo Forum" and "China-Japan Media Dialogue", help to establish new channels and forms for frank, in-depth and rational dialogues as well as a platform for the two peoples to deepen their mutual understanding, he said.     Executives of key Japanese media such as public broadcaster NHK,TV Asahi, The Yumiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News Agency said that it is the common aspiration of both peoples as well as their historical responsibility to promote the steady and sustained growth of Japan-China relations.     They also made proposals on advancing exchanges between media of the two countries, expanding bilateral cooperation on economy and trade and improving feelings the two peoples harbor toward each other.     On Tuesday, Li visited the headquarters of The Yumiuri Shimbun and NHK, inquiring in detail about the management and operation of the two Japanese media.     Li arrived here Sunday for an official goodwill visit. BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The global financial crisis has not yet hit bottom and its impact is still spreading, said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during his first-ever online chat Saturday.     He also promised that China is "ready to take firmer and stronger actions whenever necessary." The major impact of the crisis is on the country's real economy instead of its financial sector, which after more than 10 years of reform, is relatively stable and healthy and capable of withstanding the crisis, he said.     Wen said China's east coastal areas were hit hard, where the economy is more export-dependent and labor intensive. The decline of international market demands also caused the unemployment of a great number of migrant workers. The fourth is the building of a comprehensive social security network.     INITIAL RESULTS, BUT TEMPORARY     Wen said "the stimulus measures have shown initial effects and produced good results in certain areas and fields."     For example, the country has seen consecutive growth in credit supply, with new loans standing around 440 billion yuan in November, 770 billion yuan in December and 1.63 trillion yuan in January, Wen said.     He also cited figures on stronger retail sales and the rebound of power generation and use.     Consumption rose 18 percent year-on-year in January, while power generation in the Feb. 11-20 period increased 15 percent year-on-year, or up 13.2 percent from the first ten days of this month, he said.     "Some key indicators showed the economic situation has somewhat turned better," he said. "But those were just temporary indices and couldn't be fully compared with the past figures."     Wen said one indicator he valued most was power generation. "Starting from mid February, power generation and consumption have both resumed growth," he said.     "We must fully realize we are facing a long-term and arduous task," he added.     "We must strengthen confidence in the face of the crisis and be ready to take firmer and stronger actions when necessary."     CONCERNS ON EMPLOYMENT, INCOME GAP AND PROPERTY     Wen said migrant workers had been hit the hardest during the financial crisis.     About 20 million migrant workers in China had returned to the countryside from cities without jobs, said Chen Xiwen, director of the office of the central leading group on rural work, early this month.     Other government officials estimated the number at 12 million. Wen acknowledged the accurate number is yet to be counted.     He said migrant workers did not complain about the government and quietly returned to their hometowns, "some engaging in farming again, others still seeking jobs."     "I want to take the opportunity to extend my gratitude to our migrant workers," he said, adding they had made great contributions to the nation.     The government should encourage them to start their own business by offering tax stimulus and training opportunities, said Wen.     He also expressed deep concerns over the employment issue of college students and jobless urban families.     "Employment is not only related to one's livelihood but also one's dignity," said Wen.     China's State Council, or the cabinet, issued a notice on Feb. 10 urging governments at all levels to make every possible effort to expand employment.     When answering netizens' concerns over income discrepancies, Wen said narrowing the rich-poor gap could not be achieved "in a static state" and should be conducted alongside with economic development.     He acknowledged that China's social and economic development does have the problem of "imbalanced, discordant and unsustainable" growth.     The major problem is the imbalance between different regions, between the urban and rural areas and income imbalance, he said.     Meanwhile, Wen said he still has confidence in China's economy and the development of Chinese enterprises.     In a reply to complaints over the slumping stock market, he said he is confident about the capital market as its performance is decided by economic fundamentals and company profitability.     The government has the responsibility to establish an open, fair and transparent market environment and resolutely fight against illegal acts such as manipulating the market, he said.     Housing prices were among the most frequently asked questions raised by netizens during the chat. BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called for the country's law-enforcement personnel to learn the selfless dedication to the people from Tan Dong, a policeman in Sichuan Province.     Tan, 45, was a traffic policeman in Dayi County of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan. He died of myocarditis on Jan. 5 because of long-time hard work at his position.     On Dec. 29 last year, in order to save a person having fallen into a trench in a car accident, Tan jumped into the cold water and got a serious cold. Being seriously sick afterwards, Tan insisted on working, until the last minute of his life.     After his death, Tan was honored as a first-class model by the Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.     On Friday, some of Tan's relatives and colleagues were invited to give a report on his heroic deeds in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The audience were deeply moved by the report and gave applauses to show their respect for the hero.     More than 800 police and citizen representatives listened to the report.     Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Tan's families and colleagues before the report.     "He is an ordinary, but great person. SHENYANG, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior Party official on Tuesday called for all-out efforts to safeguard fairness, justice and social stability, through improving the political and legal work and developing the law-enforcement sector.     Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks at a workshop on political and legal work and safeguarding stability in northeast China, held in Shenyang, the capital of northeastern Liaoning Province.     Zhou, who also heads the Central Political Science and Law Commission (CPSLC) of the CPC, made an inspection tour of the three northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning from Feb. 11-16 and attended the workshop on Wednesday.     The senior Party official urged local authorities, political and legal departments in particular, to implement central government's policies and integrate their efforts to safeguard social stability with efforts to achieve economic development.     "Social stability relies on economic development," he said.     Zhou told local authorities to conduct an assessment on social risks before deciding on a new policy.
