SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local wildlife researcher is being remembered after he died Thursday at a remote canyon in San Pasqual Valley.David Bittner, 75, of Julian, died what he loved doing. He was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras in the Brady Canyon area, when he fell at least 50 feet. For decades, Bittner led a free "hawk watch" on Saturdays during the first two months of the year, where biologists would teach the community about birds and their relationship to raptors.Begent said the wildlife expert helped educate thousands on the importance of wildlife preservation, even purchasing 3,000 acres and gifting it to the county as a wildlife preserve, according to Begent."His life was dedicated fully to his love of wildlife and wild places, helping educate thousands on the balance of preservation and healthy appreciation of wildlife while protecting their habitat first and foremost," said Katie Quint, who worked closely with Bittner.Thursday, Bittner was replacing batteries near the location of a threatened Golden Eagle's nest, according to Quint. "Dave has been advocating for San Diego County’s Golden Eagle population with local agencies by ensuring the long-term documentation of their nesting ecology over the past 31 years," said Quint.Saturday, a special tribute is planned for Bittner from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Begent Ranch in Ramona, the area where he connected so many to his love of wildlife. 2210

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A judge declared a mistrial Monday in the retrial of an undocumented immigrant accused of being the driver in a San Ysidro hit-and-run crash which seriously injured a young boy.Constantino Banda Acosta was charged with the crash on Camino de la Plaza May 6, 2017.Investigators said Banda ran a stop sign at Dairy Mart Rd. and crashed his pickup truck into the Lake family’s Honda Accord.6-year-old Lennox Lake was in a child safety seat at the back of the car. He suffered serious head injuries.Banda left the scene but was arrested about two miles away after Border Patrol agents spotted his damaged truck parked on a street, police said.RELATED: Retrial begins for undocumented immigrant in crashDuring Banda's first trial, his passenger, Jorge Adame Ariza, also an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, testified under a grant of immunity during the defendant's two-day preliminary hearing in June that he and Banda had a number of beers that night before the accident.Adame said Banda got into a fight with another man outside a Chula Vista restaurant. Adame told them he picked up Banda but later moved into the passenger seat with Banda behind the wheel during the crash.San Diego police Officer Michael Muniz testified in the first trial that Banda's blood-alcohol content measured .151 and .152 percent -- the legal limit is .08 -- during two breathalyzer tests.Federal immigration officials said Banda has been deported from the United States 17 times.Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials told 10News if Banda is not tried again (and effectively not convicted) he may or may not be deported.  ICE has requested that he be forwarded to the agency's custody upon any potential release. She’s one of the employees at the Hotel del Coronado who has opted for the hotel's cross-border HMO health plan called SIMNSA, which is licensed by the State of California.“[Are you] saving like 60 to 80%?” we ask. “Oh, yes,” she responds.Christina Carrillo is the president and CEO of SIMNSA. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A popular summer reading program in City Heights had to adapt to overcome challenges from the Coronavirus.In previous years, the United Way of San Diego County's Readers in the Heights program offered kids a chance to explore books through active reading and play at community centers throughout the area. It aims to help kids avoid the summer "brain drain" of falling behind while not in class.In 2020, the Coronavirus Pandemic threatened to cancel the program, since gatherings were prohibited."We heard across the board that the transition from in-person to online schools was leading to a bit of online fatigue," says Ian Gordon, the United Way of San Diego County Senior VP and Chief Impact Officer.Rather than more Zoom-based readings or online classes, the United Way of San Diego County decided to base the program out of each family's home.They gave out 1500 books and more than 400 activity kits to keep the kids engaged over the summer. They also encouraged parents and siblings to read with the kids."It was different in many ways," says Gordon. "But it absolutely was successful."According to the United Way of San Diego County, 93% of the families in the program continued reading throughout the summer. At the end, 85% of the kids said they enjoyed reading, compared with 55% at the beginning of the summer.Parents also said they felt more confident and comfortable reading with their children."It was really nice," says Emily Lira. Her son Brian and daughter Emily took part in the program."It gave me more time to set apart from my schedule to read a book with the kids," she says.The United Way of San Diego County also gave the families face masks and hand sanitizer to help with safety during the summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died late Saturday night after a home caught fire in Paradise Hills.Fire crews say the fire erupted just after 10 p.m. on Calle Cumbre Street.Neighbors in the area reported hearing a loud boom before flames could be seen bursting from the homeFirefighters say neighbors then began breaking windows in an attempt to get the people trapped inside the home out.The two men inside the home were taken to the hospital where one of them died. The second man is in unknown condition.Fire investigators have ruled the fire accidental.  566
