The funeral for Rayshard Brooks — an Atlanta man who was killed during an altercation with police earlier this month — took place Tuesday in a church with connections to the Civil Rights movement.Brooks' funeral was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta — the same church where Rev. Rolfe's partner, Officer Devin Brosnan, first encountered Brooks after Brooks had fallen asleep in his car while waiting in the restaurant's drive-thru line.Rolfe arrived on the scene a few moments later. The officers subjected Brooks to a field sobriety test, which he failed. He later offered to lock his car and walk home, but Brosnan and Rolfe told Brooks they would be taking him into custody.As the officers attempted to handcuff Brooks, a struggle ensued. Brooks was able to grab Brosnan's stun gun and attempted to flee the scene. As he fled, Brooks appeared to point the stun gun in the direction of the police. That's when Rolfe shot Brooks in the back. Brooks later died in surgery at a local hospital.Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard says Rolfe kicked Brooks after shooting him but before calling for emergency medical help. He also alleged that Brosnan stood on Brooks' shoulder. Both face charges in connection with Brooks' death, with Rolfe facing murder charges. 1701

The family of Stephon Clark, the 22-year-old black man shot and killed by Sacramento Police, will be exploring "every legal remedy possible" in search of justice, according to their attorney Benjamin Crump.Speaking to CNN on Sunday, Crump said Clark's death should not be "swept under the rug." The Florida State Senate passed a bill Monday that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, require a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases and ban the sale or possession of bump fire stocks, which can make it easier for a semi-automatic weapon to function like an automatic rifle.The "Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act" (SB 7026) would also give law enforcement more power to seize weapons and ammunition from those deemed mentally unfit or otherwise a threat and provide additional funding for armed school resource officers and for mental health services.The Senate measure comes more than two weeks after a gunman killed 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The CDC could take over handling COVID-19 data coming in from states and medical facilities again, according to media reports.This week, during a briefing on a visit to Arkansas, Dr. Deborah Birx said the CDC is working "to build a revolutionary new data system so it can be moved back to the CDC" for tracking COVID-19 treatment, patients and PPE needs, according to the Wall Street Journal.The CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network site had been tracking COVID-19 cases and data since the pandemic started.Then, abruptly in mid-July, hospitals and states were asked to stop using it and send their information directly to Health and Human Services, and a new database created by private contractor TeleTracking.The request was initially made in an effort to cut down on duplicate requests and minimize the reporting burden on hospitals and facilities.However, many hospitals, state officials and journalists noted the numbers in the new system seemed incomplete and the database was slow to update.The CDC is reportedly working with the U.S. Digital Service, according to the WSJ, an agency set up during the Obama administration to help improve HealthCare.gov, the marketplace for insurance plans that are part of the Affordable Care Act.There was no timeline mentioned as part of Dr. Birx’s comments, according to NPR. 1333
