SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Institutes of Health highlighted research Tuesday out of UC San Diego that could unlock a new way to treat COVID-19.The research reveals new insight into how the coronavirus hijacks cells, and how doctors might be able to set traps or decoys to combat the virus. The findings were published in the journal Cell last month.“It does open up another avenue for a potential treatment,” said UC San Diego distinguished professor Dr. Jeffrey Esko. “It’s not a cure. It would be something that would tamp down infection potentially.”Since January, scientists around the world have understood that SARS-Co-V2, the official name of the new coronavirus, enters cells by latching onto a specific receptor on the cell’s surface, called ACE2.The UCSD team, led by Dr. Esko and visiting scholar Dr. Thomas Clausen, discovered that this entry mechanism is actually a two-step process, and the virus must also attach to a long chain of sugars called heparan sulfate.“We’ve shown this is fundamental to the infectious mechanism, so it needs to be part of every study from now on,” said Clausen.All cells are coated with a complex layer of sugars, or carbohydrates, called glycans. Heparan sulfate is one type of glycan that is known to play a key role in the infection process in several viruses, including herpes and other coronaviruses.It’s a complicated process to picture so the researchers offer an analogy: imagine a bird, soaring over trees, hunting a worm on the forest floor. The bird is the coronavirus and the trees are the thick layer of glycans that coat the surface of the cell.To reach the worm, which in this case is the receptor ACE2, the bird must navigate its way through the trees, specifically through heparan sulfate.The UCSD found that by removing the heparan sulfate trees with an enzyme, they were able to prevent the virus from infecting cells. In laboratory testing, they also found a second technique worked to foil the virus: introducing more trees as bait.The team found that heparin, an FDA-approved drug that is similar in structure to heparan sulfate, successfully acted as decoy. Heparin is a widely used drug designed to treat blood clots. Since blood clots and strokes are common complications with COVID-19, many doctors already administer heparin to patients.The UCSD team demonstrated that the two approaches can block infection in lab-grown cells about 80 to 90 percent of the time.“Certainly in the laboratory you can demonstrate that it works, but to deploy it and use it as a therapeutic has not been demonstrated,” Esko said.The NIH noted that more studies are planned to explore whether heparin, heparan sulfate, or drugs that target heparan sulfate might yield a viable COVID-19 treatment.Dr. Esko said he’s already been in talks with companies that plan to use their study as a rationale for a clinical trial.“It is very humbling when you realize we’re working on a pandemic right now, and maybe what we’ve done can contribute to a treatment for the disease,” he said. 3038

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former head of the Poway Unified School District appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on five felony charges.Officials charged John Collins with misappropriating and misuse of public money.The complaint accuses Collins of misappropriation of public money dealing with vacation time and sick leave. Poway Unified fired Collins in 2017 after a scathing audit had alleged he received more than 0,000 in overpayments and unauthorized payments.The audit also claims there were an additional ,000 in other transactions that violated district policy and some questionable purchases for airline tickets, dinners and hotel fees.Collins attorney did not respond to 10News request for a comment, but in the past, Collins denied engaging in conduct that was dishonest.If convicted on all charges, Collins could face more than seven years behind bars. 894
