LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Mudslides, flooded freeways and dangerous driving conditions plagued the Southland Thursday thanks to a second straight day of rain, prompting road closures, mandatory evacuation orders in Orange County and fears that the situation could get much worse before the storm moves out. As of midday, no evacuation orders had been issued in the Malibu area, the scene of the recent Woolsey Fire that now has residents on the lookout for mud and debris flows. A mudslide during the morning commute inundated a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Leo Carrillo State Beach, forcing a full closure of the heavily traveled roadway clear north to Ventura County. Crews had the bulk of the mud cleared by midday, and the road was reopened. In Orange County, voluntary evacuation orders were issued Thursday morning for select neighborhoods near the Holy Fire, affecting the Trabuco Creek, Rose Canyon and Mystic Oaks/El Cariso areas. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Actor Danny Masterson -- who is charged with raping three women at his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003 -- made his first appearance Friday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom but did not enter a plea.The 44-year-old actor known for appearing on "That '70s Show" and "The Ranch" was ordered to return to court Oct. 19 for arraignment.Masterson was charged June 16 with three counts of forcible rape. It said Sunday it was "considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and U.S. cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached." LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists say earthquakes that hammered the Southern California desert last summer involved ruptures on a web of interconnected faults and increased strain on a major nearby fault that has begun to slowly move.Research published Thursday in the journal Science says the earthquake sequence ended a few miles from the Garlock Fault, which runs 185 miles (300 kilometers) from the San Andreas Fault to Death Valley.The fault has been relatively quiet for 500 years but now has begun to creep.The quakes began July 4 near Ridgecrest, about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.A magnitude 6.4 foreshock was followed by a 7.1 mainshock and 100,000-plus aftershocks.The study was conducted by geophysicists from California Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 818
