WASHINGTON, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Salmonella infections have not decreased during the past 15 years and have instead increased by 10 percent in recent years in the United States, according to a report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).During the same time period, illnesses from the serious Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157 have been cut nearly in half and the overall rates of foodborne infections have been reduced by 23 percent, the new Vital Signs report said. The report summarizes 2010 data from CDC's Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet), which serves as America's report card for food safety by tracking whether nine of the most common infections transmitted through foods are increasing or decreasing."Although foodborne infections have decreased by nearly one-fourth in the past 15 years, more than one million people in this country become ill from Salmonella each year, and Salmonella accounts for about half of the hospitalizations and deaths among the nine foodborne illnesses CDC tracks through FoodNet," said CDC Director Thomas Frieden in a statement. In 2010, FoodNet sites, which include about 15 percent of the American population, reported nearly 20,000 illnesses, 4,200 hospitalizations and 68 deaths from nine foodborne infections. Of those, Salmonella caused more than 8,200 infections, nearly 2,300 hospitalizations and 29 deaths (54 percent of the total hospitalizations and 43 percent of the total deaths reported through FoodNet). CDC estimates that there are 29 infections for every lab-confirmed Salmonella infection.Salmonella, which is responsible for an estimated 365 million U.S. dollars in direct medical costs each year in the United States, can be challenging to address because so many different foods like meats, eggs, produce, and even processed foods, can become contaminated with it and finding the source can be challenging because it can be introduced in many different ways.In response to that challenge, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates eggs, produce and many processed foods, has developed new rules for the egg industry to follow under its recently expanded regulatory authorities. The rate of E. coli O157 cases reported by FoodNet was two cases per 100,000 people in 1997 and, by 2010, had decreased to 0.9 cases per 100,000 people. The CDC credits the reduction in E. coli to improved detection and investigation of outbreaks, cleaner slaughter methods, better inspections of ground beef processing plants, and increased awareness by consumers and restaurant employees of the importance of properly cooking beef.

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- The first close-up pictures of the asteroid Vesta, a protoplanet that dates back to the early days of the solar system, were revealed Monday by NASA scientists. The images were taken by the U.S. space agency's Dawn robotic probe, which is two weeks into a planned year-long survey of the second largest object in the main asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter.About twice the size of California, Vesta is second in size only to Ceres, Dawn's next target and, along with Pluto, one of just five known dwarf planets. NASA is spending 466 million dollars to explore Vesta and Ceres during the course of a 10-year mission.Images from Dawn show Vesta a surprisingly diverse terrain and several unexplained geologic features. Chaotic terrain near the south pole is dominated by a towering central peak and huge ripple-like grooves stretching around its equatorial belt. Bright spots, dark pits and craters are filled with unexplained streaks of black and white debris. Terrain north of the grooves is much more heavily cratered.Scientists believe Vesta grew from a clump of gas and dust left over after the sun's birth some 4.65 billion years ago, a supernova explosion, which added radioactive materials to the growing body.Dawn will spend about a year circling Vesta, tweaking its orbit and altitude using an innovative technology called ion propulsion system, chief engineer Marc Rayman with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California said. The ion propulsion system will enable Dawn to leave Vesta's orbit after a year of study and head off to Ceres, which is the largest object in the asteroid belt.

WASHINGTON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A new University of Missouri study shows that the exposure to the controversial chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) through diet has been underestimated by previous lab tests. The findings were published on Monday in Environmental Health Perspectives. In the study, researchers compared BPA concentrations in mice that were given a steady diet supplemented with BPA throughout the day, compared to the more common lab method of single exposure, and found an increased absorption and accumulation of BPA in the blood of the mice. The authors continuously exposed the mice to BPA through their feed, which is considered the primary route of exposure to this chemical in animals and humans. In previous studies examining the effects of BPA, mice were exposed to BPA only through a one-time administration.Following the exposure through the diet, a significantly greater increase in the active form of BPA, which is the greatest threat as it is the form that can bind to sex steroid receptors and exert adverse effects, was absorbed and accumulated in the animals."People are primarily and unknowingly exposed to BPA through the diet because of the various plastic and paper containers used to store our food are formulated with BPA," said Cheryl Rosenfeld, associate professor in biomedical sciences and corresponding lead author. "We know that the active form of BPA binds to our steroid receptors, meaning it can affect estrogen, thyroid and testosterone function. It might also cause genetic mutations. Thus, this chemical can hinder our ability to reproduce and possibly cause behavioral abnormalities that we are just beginning to understand."The study notes that more than eight billion pounds of BPA are produced every year, and more than 90 percent of people in the United States have measurable amounts of BPA in their bodies."When BPA is taken through the food, the active form may remain in the body for a longer period of time than when it is provided through a single treatment, which does not reflect the continuous exposure that occurs in animal and human populations," said Rosenfeld. "We need to study this further to determine where the ingested BPA becomes concentrated and subsequently released back into the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the body."

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- A controlled trial has found that Chinese herbal medicine decoction maxingshigan-yinqiaosan has a similar efficacy to oseltamivir in reducing time to fever resolution in people suffering mild H1N1 influenza virus infections.Carried out by a group of Chinese researchers, headed by Prof. Wang Chen with Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital under the Capital Medical University, the study was published by the famous internal medicine journal Ann Intern Med on Tuesday.Participants of the trial were 410 young adults aged 15 to 59 years with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 influenza. The researchers concluded that both active intervention, alone and in combination, were effective in reducing time to fever resolution in young adults with H1N1 flu, and therefore suggest that maxingshigan-yinqiaosan may be an alternative to oseltamivir.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Fisker Automotive, a Southern California electric car maker, announced on Thursday that it has signed a pact with BMW regarding the supply of engines and other related components for future models in a major tieup. The Anaheim, Orange County-based U.S. car maker will get a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, totalling 100,000 units every year, for its next generation of cars under a project code-named "Project Nina," the company said. The production of the model, a mass-market plug-in hybrid sedan, will begin at the end of 2012 and the sale is slated for 2013."The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world," Fisker's CEO and Executive Design Director Henrik Fisker said. "We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW."The firm did not disclose the terms. The U.S. automaker, founded in 2007, has produced electric vehicles with extended range (EVer).
