As a high school senior in Louisiana, Lauren Fidelak maintained a 4.0 GPA and scored a stellar 34 on her ACT. But when she applied to her preferred schools, the University of Southern California and UCLA, she wasn't accepted. The rejections left her so upset she had an emotional breakdown and needed to be hospitalized in Boston.Fidelak and her mother, Keri, are now among a group of seven students and parents who filed a federal lawsuit seeking class-action status against USC, UCLA and other colleges named in the sprawling admissions scandal, saying their admissions process was "warped and rigged by fraud."The plaintiffs allege in part negligence, unfair competition and violations of consumer law, according to an amended lawsuit filed Thursday in US District Court for the Northern District of California.Fidelak, now a student at Tulane University, is joined in the lawsuit by Stanford student Kalea Woods; community college student Tyler Bendis and his mother, Julia; and Rutgers student Nicholas James Johnson and his father, James. The students and parents in the lawsuit said they spent money to apply to schools named in the college admissions scandal, and attorneys say they wouldn't have applied had they known about the alleged scheme."Had Plaintiffs known that the system was warped and rigged by fraud, they would not have spent the money to apply to the school," the lawsuit states. "They also did not receive what they paid for — a fair admissions consideration process."Stanford student Erica Olsen, who was included in the initial lawsuit, has dropped out of the suit, according to the updated amendment. CNN has reached out to her attorney for comment. The lawsuit asks for a variety of relief, including compensatory and punitive damages, restitution and other relief deemed proper by court. The lawsuit names Stanford, USC, UCLA, the University of San Diego, the University of Texas at Austin and Wake Forest, Yale and Georgetown universities as defendants. The schools were cited in the stunning nationwide conspiracy that federal prosecutors unveiled Tuesday.According to the lawsuit, Bendis was not accepted to UCLA, Stanford and USD, while Johnson was rejected from Texas and Stanford. An earlier version of the lawsuit alleged Woods had been damaged in that her Stanford degree was not worth as much because prospective employers may question whether graduates were admitted to the school on their own merits "versus having parents who were willing to bribe school officials." However, that argument is not included in the amended complaint.CNN is reaching out to the universities named for comment on the lawsuit.Prosecutors say the schools are victimsFifty people, including 2716

California police have identified the girl whose body was found inside a duffel bag near an equestrian trail last week. She was 9-year-old Trinity Love Jones, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that described her as a Los Angeles County resident."Although the Coroner's Office determined the death to be a homicide, the cause of death is being withheld," the sheriff's department statement said. "Investigators have detained two persons of interest in this case and they are actively continuing their investigation."After learning her identity, relatives arrived at a memorial to the girl -- established where her body had been found in Hacienda Heights, 695

As part of a series of tweets on Friday morning, President Donald Trump said that the government would be partially shut down for a "very long time" if the Senate does not vote in favor of a spending bill that allocates billion for a border wall with Mexico."The Democrats, whose votes we need in the Senate, will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED. If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!" Trump tweeted. The lame duck Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved a spending bill on Thursday evening that fully funds Trump's border wall. The vote passed 217-185 with no votes from Democrats. The bill is considered dead on arrival in the Senate, where the margin of Republicans to Democrats is currently 51-49. Sixty votes are needed to pass the spending bill.Trump also tweeted a call for the Senate to switched to the so-called "nuclear option": Changing the Senate rules to limit debate and allow budget laws to pass through the chamber with a simply majority as opposed to 60 votes.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has long been reluctant to deploy such an option for legislative options. The Senate passed a spending bill earlier this week that did not provide any funding for a border wall. After initially indicating he would sign the bill if it passed the House of Representatives, Trump backtracked on Thursday and announced he would only sign a bill the funded the government if it provided funds to build a border wall in its entirety. In a meeting with Democratic congressional leaders last week, President Trump took ownership of a potential government shutdown and 1757

An attorney for the estranged husband of a Connecticut mother who has been missing for more than a month doubled down on his theory that she may have disappeared in a "Gone Girl"-style escape from her life. The family and friends of Jennifer Dulos, 50, dismissed the suggestion that she staged her disappearance in a manner similar to the plot of the popular novel-turned-film.Monday marked one month since the mother of five was last seen in her 2017 Chevrolet Suburban in New Canaan. Friends reported her missing on May 24 after she failed to show up for appointments.Authorities found her car about three miles from the house where she had lived with her five children since splitting from her husband in 2017.Her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty to charges of evidence tampering and hindering prosecution in her disappearance and were released on bond earlier this month.Authorities said surveillance cameras captured someone resembling Fotis Dulos dumping garbage bags in trash cans that contained items stained with the missing mother's blood.State's Attorney Richard J. Colangelo told a judge that investigators found Fotis Dulos' DNA mixed with her blood in a faucet inside her home. But Fotis Dulos' lawyer offered another explanation for her disappearance, saying that they believe she left to cause hardship for her estranged husband."We have been provided a very dark 500-plus page novel Jennifer wrote,'' lawyer Norm Pattis said in a 1494
