DENVER -- Starting with the next academic year, students in a Colorado school districtwill attend classes for four days each week instead of five.For the past few months, the 27J school district — which covers portions of the Denver suburbs, including Brighton, Commerce City, Henderson and Thornton in addition to unincorporated areas of Adams, Broomfield and Weld counties — has been exploring and discussing the idea of a shorter week and on Monday, the district made it official.Students will attend classes Tuesday through Friday. Rather than extending the school year to meet state requirements for instruction time, students will be in class longer each day.For elementary schools and full-day kindergarten, school will begin at 7:50 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Middle and high schools will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:32 p.m.To address concerns from parents about child care on Mondays, the district will offer child care from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a fee of per child per day.District officials said the change is due in part to the district's difficulty competing with other districts in terms of recruiting and retaining teachers, who often leave for other districts that pay better. Officials hope a shorter work week will encourage more teachers to stay put."I realize this will be a significant change for our students, their families, and the communities we are so fortunate to serve, but our district can no longer be expected to do more with less financial resources," said 27J Superintendent Dr. Chris Fiedler. "We are 100% committed to providing our students with the necessary skills and competencies that will enable a future far beyond graduation. DENVER, Colo. — On Wednesday, a Boulder man released videos of his July 29 arrest, and said he's ready to take action against the Denver Police Department for "savagely" beating him. He also claims an officer sexually assaulted him with a baton.Michael Jacobs, a self-described student activist, was arrested on July 29 during a "Stop the Sweep" homeless protest at Lincoln Park, across from the Colorado State Capitol.He says he was rattling a fence at Lincoln Park to get an officer's attention and says he was taken down by officers."I was grabbed from behind, it felt like it was from my neck, no warning, no 'you're under arrest,'" Jacobs said.It's important to stress that little is known about what led up to the takedown. Video shows people shaking a fence at the park and then the takedown.In the video, you see an officer run towards Jacobs and then several officers holding him down. You can briefly see an officer use his baton against Jacobs in the recording."One of the officers took his baton, lifted it in the air and forcefully shoved it into my a**," Jacobs said.A probable cause statement released by the Denver Police Department claims Jacobs was part of a group trying to push down a gate at Lincoln Park and adds that they managed to bring it down and get inside.But in the video, Jacobs is outside of the fence.The police report states Jacobs violently resisted arrest and even grabbed an officer's pepper ball gun. It's a claim Jacobs and his attorney, Dr. Matt Greife, dispute."That could not be further from the truth," Jacobs said."To say that he attempted to disarm a police officer of their pepper gun or pepper ball gun, that's nonsense, he was on the ground way too fast," Dr. Greife said.According to Dr. Greife, it's been challenging to obtain vital evidence they should be granted to prepare for a lawsuit and a civil claim they plan to file."We should know what the police reports say. We should know what the body cams tell us," Dr. Greife said.Denver police say they launched an internal investigation and added that it would be inappropriate to comment further.Medical records provided by Jacobs' attorney to KMGH show a doctor couldn't conclusively identify sexual abuse from the incident.Jacobs is facing a felony charge of attempting to disarm a police officer. DEL MAR (CNS) - Two horses that died when they collided while training at the Del Mar Racetrack last summer were processed into animal by-products instead of being taken to a UC Davis Animal Health and Safety Laboratory per protocol, it was reported Friday.The two horses killed in the July 18 head-on collision -- Charge A Bunch and Carson Valley -- were taken to a rendering plant near the El Sobrante Landfill in Corona, where they were processed into products such as fertilizer and bone meal before their remains were sent to the landfill, the Los Angeles Times reported."I got a call first thing in the morning after the accident saying the horses never arrived," Dr. Rick Arthur, equine medical director for the California Horse Racing Board, told the newspaper.Del Mar track officials got a call from the California Horse Racing Board because, by statute, it is the track's responsibility to get the bodies to the testing laboratory, according to The Times, which reported that an investigation found that Stiles Animal Removal was at fault for the mistake."The owner of Stiles admitted that he forgot to inform the new driver of this requirement (to take the remains to the state lab)," according to a CHRB investigators report.Mike Martin, spokesman for the CHRB, told the newspaper he contacted Mac McBride, Del Mar's media director, one day after the mistake was discovered and they spoke the day after that."Mac said that Del Mar would make an announcement as soon as a CHRB investigation was complete," Marten told the newspaper.Del Mar has made no public statement since the investigation concluded, but a statement by Chief Operating Officer Josh Rubinstein was given to The Times last week."As soon as the CHRB made us aware of the error by the contractor responsible for transport to the necropsy facility, Del Mar responded immediately and appropriately, including terminating that vendor," Rubinstein said.
