SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man is in custody after a chase ended in a standoff with police at a Mission Bay Motel Sunday morning. Police say the chase started just before 9 a.m. at the A-1 Storage on Garnett Avenue after officers received a citizens' tip. The suspect driving a U-Haul truck led police on a short chase to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive near Roadway in San Diego.According to police, the man is wanted on felony weapons charges. After the chase ended, a woman in the passenger seat was detained while the driver ran into the nearby motel. The woman was later released. While searching for the suspect throughout the motel, officers learned that the man broke through several walls to try and escape. “This guy starts forcing himself into apartments, and now we have to deal with a possible hostage situation. That’s the reason why we brought so many resources down here. We wanted to get this guy into custody as fast as we can," Lt. Christian Sharp with the San Diego Police Department said. Eventually, police had to use chemical gas and a K-9 to apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified.  1166

He has not said what he will do with his newfound wealth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new WalletHub report found that California is among the least affordable states in the country to raise a family. Among the 50 states, California ranked last for housing affordability, 47th for median family salary (adjusted for cost of living) and 42nd for child care cost. The Golden State may not be so golden for a decent percentage of families as it also ranked 29th for percentage of families in poverty. But it’s not all bad news, California also ranked 12th for families with young kids and 11th for its separation and divorce rate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study by the Wounded Warrior Project shows nearly 87% of injured veterans struggle with their weight once they return home.That's up from both 2015 & 2016.Programs in San Diego hope to reverse that trend, helping vets shed pounds and get their lives back."I had to be reminded that I could do it again," said Marlene Krpata.While serving as an Army Captain in Iraq in 2006, a mortar blast badly injured her leg. After three years trying to save it, she decided to have it amputated."The first couple months we’re laying in a bed and not moving at all," she said.Krpata battled PTSD and depression after the blast. She says prescription drugs also slowed her down. So did her diet. She kept eating like she was on active duty, without the active lifestyle is provides."I gained 130 pounds," said Krpata.Krpata got in touch with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, who helped her get a prosthetic leg. Then friends helped her get back into sports.Now, she plays soccer, softball, boxes and runs."I’m not a Paralympian by any sport," she said. "But I stepped on the field and I made it work. I felt a little embarrassed at first, but I’m glad I did it now because it allowed me to progress up to where I was. And it’s fun again."The Wounded Warrior Project also has a wide selection of Health and Wellness Programs. They're designed to teach injured vets about nutrition and exercise. They also help form support groups to deal with depression and anxiety over starting to work out again.In San Diego, there's also the Wounded Warrior Tennis Program. It holds free tennis clinics every Tuesday at Balboa Park for injured vets. It also runs a week-long camp once a year to help jump start veterans who may need extra help.For Krpata, it's been a life-saver. She's lost nearly 60 pounds. But more than that, she feels like herself again."I’m super confident now, enjoying my sports, enjoying myself again as a soldier and leaning down," said Krpata. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was killed after crashing into a parked truck on Interstate 5 in East Village near Petco Park Monday afternoon. The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 at Imperial Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the 21-year-old victim from Calexico was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed his 2015 Nissan sedan into a parked cargo truck. CHP says the victim, who hasn't yet been identified, died at the scene.
