(KGTV) -- After a trip to visit their grandma in Ohio, eight year old Lilly and 12 year old Zachary were driving back to California with their mom and grandma when a wrong-way driver hit their car head-on in Oklahoma, killing all four of them. The wrong-way driver, identified by Oklahoma authorities as 33-year-old Ashley Louise Ricks, survived the crash.Monday, Oklahoma authorities gave an update, saying witnesses smelled alcohol at the scene of the crash. Witnesses and 911 calls also reveal the woman was driving at a high rate of speed and in the wrong direction for at least nine miles before the fatal crash occurred. Authorities said they’re currently investigating her medical history, driver history and taking blood samples before making any charges.The family was driving back to Vista, near San Diego, so Lilly could make it back home in time for school to resume. A GoFundMe created by a family friend shows the kids called their dad and stepmom every day while on vacation, telling them about the fun they’d had on their trip.Sam Homant, the kids’ dad, and their stepmom Melissa Starnes said the last time they talked to their son, it was the night of the crash.“He was excited to come home. We had just got him a brand new bed, a brand new bed that he was just so excited for, this pillow top mattress and he was so excited. And that was the last thing that we said to him,” said Starnes.They described the kids as family oriented and special. Zachary had a creative and kind heart.“He could take Legos and create anything out of Legos. He loved to build, just a smart smart little boy. Very creative. Wanted to be an architect. His imagination was off the rack,” they said.Lilly had similar passions to many little girls her age, but also loved to ride her dad’s motorcycle with him.“She loved makeup and dancing and her dolls. She loved to draw,” they said.The GoFundMe will help pay to bring the kids home. As they grieve, these parents want answers.“They had such a bright future and it’s been taken away by this lady and we don’t know why. Jessica Ward, a 6th and 8th-grade teacher at Minerva, was inspired to act after seeing a Facebook post:"Hello. We are teachers in El Paso. We would like to know if anyone is interested in sending us postcards to help our students know there is plenty of good in our world. As teachers, we may only be able to say so much. We think concrete messages of support would help us calm some fears. Any thoughts?"Ward and her more than 160 students got to work, creating letters filled with love, support, funny jokes, and positivity. "I just hope this small little gesture will bring happiness and positivity to their lives," said Ward. Ward also showed the students news clips of the tragedy, answering questions about what happened less than a month ago. "It's just something I like to be open about, so they understand that it's important to talk about. It's not something that should be silenced, it's something that everyone should be aware of, and part of the fight is talking about it," said Ward. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A backyard workshop in Vista caught fire Sunday afternoon, according to Vista Fire officials. Neighbors said they saw thick black smoke towering into the sky and heard almost a dozen explosions.Neighbor John Ploetz said it sounded, "like a bomb, people up the street heard it.""It takes a minute you know, your brain goes oh it's probably fine, or he's welding you know and then I see there's flames, and no firemen here, and the fence is on fire, I better call 9-1-1," Ploetz said he grabbed his garden hose and worked to contain the fire. He wet down nearby foliage and put out small spot fires on the outside of the fence.Fire officials said the fire started around 12:32 p.m. and arrived at the home in the 1000 block of Ora Avo Drive in minutes. Ploetz said what he did was something anyone would do and he was concerned the fire would spread to other homes nearby. He was shocked when a pine tree burned up in seconds, "it just whoosh! Went up like a torch, it was loud, that was before the firemen got here."The workshop contained propane tanks, and tools for metal art that the homeowner creates as a hobby. The family was at church when the fire started and were thankful no one was hurt. Among the valuables they lost were three boats and a motor home.Firefighters are still investigating the cause. 1340

President Donald Trump has been using the Rose Garden a lot more lately for statements and news conferences in the age of coronavirus. The First Lady says the renovation will make the garden more accessible to people with disabilities, and make improvements for audiovisual and broadcasting needs. It will also provide improve drainage and conditions for the plants and flowers. “The very act of planting a garden involves hard work and hope in the possibility of a bright future,” the First Lady said in a statement published to the White House website. “Preserving the history and beauty of the White House and its grounds is a testament to our nation’s commitment to the care of this landscape and our dedication to American ideals, safeguarding them for our children and their children for generations to come.”The Rose Garden was first installed in 1962 during the Kennedy Administration. VISTA (CNS) - An Oceanside man who allegedly fatally struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk while fleeing from another crash was charged Friday with murder, among other charges.Wesley Stuart, 27, was also charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run and drunken driving, and faces 15 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges stemming from the Tuesday night death of 65-year-old Tran Thanhminh of Oceanside.Police said the initial crash was reported shortly after 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at Douglas Drive and Mission Avenue.RELATED: 65-year-old man killed, driver arrested in Oceanside hit-and-runInvestigators believe Stuart was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and was speeding eastbound on Mission, ran a red light and collided with a Ford F-150 pickup that was northbound on Douglas, Oceanside police Sgt. Rick Davis said.After the crash, the Chevy driver backed up and headed east on Mission, where he struck Thanhminh in a crosswalk, dragging him about 150 feet down the street, the sergeant said.Thanhminh, who died at the scene, was with his wife at the time, though she was not struck, authorities said.The couple had just closed their restaurant for the day and were walking home when he was hit, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, which stated that his wife had already crossed the street when she heard the crash, but did not see her husband when she turned to look into the street.Stuart allegedly continued on Mission before getting out of the pickup at Rancho Del Oro and fleeing on foot with a passenger, Davis said.Officers searched the area with the help of a police helicopter and apprehended the two outside Stuart's home, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.Stuart was arrested.
