SAN DIEGO — A growing number of restaurants in San Diego want to wall off the parking spots outside their front doors and replace them with tables.The concept is called a Parklet, and the city of San Diego appears to be ready to embrace it - at least until social distancing mandates lift. "It's San Diego. We're getting the most beautiful weather of the year. Let us have some seats out there. Let us have some tables," said Merritte Powell, who owns La Puerta restaurant on 4th Avenue. Powell is readying an application to the city that would allow him to build on a curbside section of the street in front of his restaurant and put more seating. He says it's key to survive amid social distancing restrictions, which have limited his capacity. In fact, La Puerta even with hourlong waits still only pulls in 50 percent of the revenue it would have made before the Coronavirus outbreak. On bad days, revenue drops by as much as 70 percent. "Because of the way the seating is, because of the social distancing, stuff like that, I'm nowhere near where I need to be," Powell said. On July 7, the City Council will consider an urgency ordinance that would waive some fees for Parklets and help streamline their construction. Restaurants from downtown, Little Italy and North Park are all readying applications. The opportunity could help level the playing field for restaurants on streets that cannot be closed to vehicle traffic for on-street dining. The city has already permitted road closures on 5th Avenue and India Street for restaurants to expand. A stretch of North Park could be next. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Zoo has two new arrivals: a pair of endangered African penguin chicks.The zoo announced Wednesday that the fluffy chicks, named Doug and Barbara, hatched two months ago.The eggs came from two breeding couples. The zoo says it's the first time eggs laid by its adult penguins have hatched there.Staff has been working with the chicks to get them used to humans before they are introduced into the penguin colony in the next few weeks.African penguins are an endangered species. Their numbers have dropped by more than 60% in the past three decades and only 23,000 breeding pairs are known to exist.The decline is blamed on several factors, including disease, habitat destruction and lack of food from overfishing, climate change and pollution. 781

SALT LAKE CITY — A 15-year-old boy has died from his injuries after he became trapped in a car that flipped into the Jordan River Canal late Saturday night.The 20-year-old driver and two kids escaped the car before emergency crews arrived, but the 15-year-old and a two-year-old remained trapped in the vehicle.Family identified the victim as Justin Bates. His uncle says the teen made it out of the car safely before going back into the water in an attempt to rescue the little girl.“He was good hearted. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of San Diego high school seniors will be honored with other students from throughout Southern California Friday at the second annual Pacific Islander High School Graduate Recognition Ceremony in San Bernardino.Long Beach, Inland Empire and other surrounding regions will participate in the event, which will include cultural celebrations like a Polynesian fireknife performance and a Maori warrior dance.Siaosi Veimau, who immigrated to the U.S. from Tonga at age 10, will serve as the ceremony's keynote speaker.
