SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego mother and daughter who both have Type 1 Diabetes are navigating the disease together.Keary and Zola Chaney are among the first to use a new device which sends life-saving alerts to your smartwatch or cell phone.The Dexcom G6 is a small sensor that monitors blood sugar levels 24 hours a day and requires no finger-pricking. The FDA-approved sensor is easy to put on and can be worn for 10 days. "I feel like I have more control and diabetes has less control over me, which is the most freeing feeling in the world," said Keary, Zola's mom. Keary says Dexcom, a San Diego-based company, is not only simplifying their lives but also saving them, especially when their blood sugar levels get low. Keary can monitor both her and Zola's blood glucose levels on her smartphone, even if they're thousands of miles apart. The device will be readily available to consumers in June and is covered by most insurance companies.   1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Sheriffs deputies detained a man in Lemon Grove this afternoon, who may be connected to an early morning carjacking.It was supposed to be a routine check-up. A 76-year-old woman was going in for a 7 a.m. eye appointment at a medical office on the 3900 block of Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest.But she never made it.“The man with the gun pointed it at the woman, so I guess it was just taking place, and she scrammed out of there and called 911," a woman named Nancy said. She said her friend witnessed the carjacking happen from across the parking structure.San Diego Police detectives said a shorter, thin, Hispanic man with short hair approached the grandmother, pointed a gun at her face, stole her purse, and drove off in her gray Mazda 3.Officers notified all nearby agencies to search for that car.Then at 9:45 a.m., the car was found on Lemon Grove Way in Lemon Grove. But it was in bad condition. “A few hours later, the Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a hit-and-run that involved that very vehicle, the victim’s vehicle," Lt. Andrew Hoffman of the San Diego Police Department said. Witnesses said the driver of the Mazda 3 hit a parked red Honda Civic, veered into a pole, then ran away.For two hours, investigators set up a perimeter of the area and used a helicopter to look for the car-jacking and hit-and-run suspect. But they came up empty.Then at 2 p.m., detectives did a secondary search of the apartment complex.That is when one of the deputies recognized a wanted man and arrested him. “I guess the guy walked out of the apartment, the other officer saw him from the back of the cop car, must have recognized him," witness Floyd Bloom said. "So that’s when they yanked him out of the car. But he reached for the officer’s taser and his gun. And so they tased him.”San Diego sheriffs deputies said the man they detained is a tall, thin Caucasian man, who was possibly wearing a disguise.Detectives said a curly, black-haired wig fell off of the man during his struggle with police. They also found a rifle and ammunition in the back of his trunk.San Diego County Sheriffs deputies detained the man, then handed him over to the San Diego Police department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With young children fast asleep in their bedroom, surveillance video shows a burglar on the prowl at a home in South Park. Just off 32nd Street, Billy McCowan woke up to a disturbing sight on Wednesday morning."Came over and saw the side door open to the garage," said McCowan.RELATED: La Mesa woman wakes up to burglar in her bedroomA look at the surveillance video revealed who had been on his property. Starting at about 8 p.m., a pickup truck pulls up and parks across from his home. At about 5 a.m., a man wrapped in a blanket emerges from the truck and walks through his front gate.McCowan believes the burglar walked through the unlocked door to a detached garage - a converted office - and grabbed an iPhone. Video shows the man roaming the property. Next up was a detached hot tub room."We had a small TV in here," said McCowan.In the video, the burglar is seen carrying that TV. Meanwhile, inside the home were McCowan's wife, and two children, ages 3 and 5. They were all asleep.Forty-five minutes after the man first arrives, the intruder is seen peering into the children's bedroom. By this time, McCowan has woken up and he's making coffee in the kitchen. The man appears to see him and ducks down, before quietly getting into his truck and driving off. It was a fortunate twist. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When school started last week at Dailard Elementary in San Carlos, the father of a second grade student noticed several large spiders and egg sacks in the area where kids hang their backpacks. He took several photos documenting the issue. When he reached out to 10News about a week later, he said he had already spoken to a teacher, custodian, and the principal about the issue but was told a work order would need to be put in to get pest control to the school. The same parent said the spiders appeared to be brown widows, which are venomous and a bite from one requires medical attention. A San Diego Unified School District spokesperson confirmed that a pest control team was sent to the school Thursday to get rid of the spiders and eggs. They also confirmed that the spiders were indeed brown widows, very common in the San Diego area. Despite the concerns, there were no reports of any children ever being bitten. 952
