SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a homeless man a Mission Valley father says tried dragging his daughter into bushes before she was able to escape.Chris Gilbert says his 11-year-old daughter went to check the mail Saturday around 2 p.m. on the 5900 block of Caminito Deporte when the incident happened.After walking across the street to check the mail, Gilbert says his daughter felt hands on her shoulders.RELATED: San Diego Homelessness Czar to go on leave to open Mormon temple"She thought it was me, sneaking up playing a game,” Gilbert said.Then, Gilbert says, the man grabbed the 11-year-old by the neck and started dragging her toward some bushes.“She told me he put his hands on her shoulders from behind and was holding her, turned around and kicked him in the shin, got loose and ran into the house and found me upstairs.”That’s when Gilbert ran downstairs to confront the homeless man, hitting him in the shoulder as a warning.RELATED: Oceanside residents demand solution to homelessness issue“I said, ‘you need to get out of here,’ then he started hitting me.”Gilbert’s daughter describes the man as six foot, two inches tall, between the ages of 40 to 45 with thick glasses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, emotional testimony was read in a downtown courtroom by the husband and wife who were brutally attacked in an economy parking lot outside of the San Diego International Airport. The testimony was read during the sentencing hearing for Alberto Jauregui, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Jauregui appeared to show no remorse. He smirked and smiled at the couple and at our camera. It was last October when police say Jauregui came up to Donna Kashani and husband Robert Bobbett in the parking lot. He reportedly grabbed Kashani by her neck and demanded the keys to their SUV. “You put me in a headlock with a 10-inch knife to my neck and you were dragging me into our SUV and demanding that I get in with you,” Kashani told him and the courtroom.  In a heroic move, Bobbett threw himself in front of her and charged at Jauregui.  “As I rushed toward you, I truly believed I was going to die in this struggle,” Bobbett told Jauregui and the courtroom. He added, “You stabbed me in the chest nearly hitting my heart. All the while [you were] screaming ‘Die, die, die!’”  Bobbett was stabbed six times and nearly died.  Jauregui was caught days later. During Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, he told the courtroom, “You guys have made a big mistake by not giving me help. Instead of giving me help, you want to punish me.” He’ll spend the next 13 years in state prison. 1456

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday plans to screen people returning from restricted countries.American citizens, legal permanent residents, and their immediate families returning to the United States will be required to arrive at one of 13 airports for enhanced screening for coronavirus.“While the overall risk of serious infection from the coronavirus to the general public remains low at this time, the Trump administration is taking these aggressive measures to keep the risk low, requiring all Americans returning from affected areas in Europe to be funneled through 13 airports for screening upon their return to the U.S.,” said Acting Secretary Wolf. “To minimize disruptions to travelers, TSA, CBP, and air carriers are working to identify qualifying passengers before their scheduled flights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People with gardens and groves in their back yard are helping others through the coronavirus pandemic, by donating their extra fruits and veggies."Especially in these times where we're just looking for good stories and good things to do, that was in my heart to encourage other people," says Terri Healy. She donated six full boxes worth of fruit from her backyard trees.Healy was inspired by a message from her Pastor at the Rock Church. So she took the fruit to a nearby nursery, and posted a sign that said "Free Organic Fruit." It was gone within a couple of days."The employees there said that the customers were just so excited to receive it," says Healy. "We're thrilled that it was used in the community."Community is a big deal to KK Kvernland. She helps run the Second Chance Youth Garden. It gives at-risk teens hands-on training in a garden, as well as mentoring. Kvernland had to cancel the classes during the pandemic and was looking for something to do with all the vegetables they grew."We usually run a delivery box service, sell at fruit stands, to restaurants, and the kids all take home food each week," she explains. "Now, we're putting our heads together, and we really want to get food to the most vulnerable people in our community, including our participants and their families." They're also asking for help, as they're missing out on the revenue they get from sales. "We're asking people to come and donate to our website so that we're able to cover the costs to provide people food to the people that needed the most," says Kvernland.For both Healy and Kvernland, and countless other people who have been giving away the fruits and veggies they grow at home, this is all about coming together during a crisis."It's just a good reminder that it's important to have community resilience," says Kvernland. "And it's important to make sure that services are accessible for all types of people.""We're trying to encourage others," says Healy. "What can you do with your farm or your ranch? Is there anything on your farms that you can use to help spread the food supply to people in your community? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after they say four teenagers were beaten, stabbed and robbed near a City Heights elementary school Saturday night.Police say the four teens were in a skate park near Cherokee Point Elementary School on the 3900 block of Landis Street when they were approached by a group of men.According to police, the man tried to start an argument, so then teens ran to a pedestrian bridge where another group of men was waiting for them.Police say the approximately 15 men punched and kicked all four victims and stole their cell phones and wallets.One of the victims was stabbed in the elbow and another was cut on the finger.One of the victims was taken to the hospital for his injuries, police say. The condition of the victims wasn’t specified.   806
