CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts.The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states.That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online.The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark.The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too.This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores.But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny. Another insurer merger proposed by Anthem and Cigna died as well.Since then, the lines between health insurers and the pharmacy giants have grown increasingly blurred and incestuous.Anthem recently started up its own PBM, called IngenioRX, and has partnered with CVS.And Walgreens has partnered with a Blue Cross-backed PBM Prime Therapeutics to form a new mail order pharmacy company.Merlo and other CVS executives did not address any of the Aetna chatter on the conference call.But if the rumors are true -- and if an Aetna deal passed antitrust scrutiny -- then CVS appears to be on its way towards building a formidable health care/retail giant that may avoid getting Amazon-ed.  2507

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Coronado Lifeguards confirmed a shark sighting on Coronado Beach Tuesday afternoon. According to a message posted on Facebook by police, the 12-foot-long white shark was spotted just off the shore of in the North Beach area just before 2 p.m. Lifeguards posted warning signs shortly after the sighting to let beachgoers know about the sighting. Lifeguards chose not to close the beach because the shark was not seen "engaging with anyone in the water.""The lifeguard was out on a paddle board about 100 yards from the shoreline, just past the surf in 6 to 8 feet of water, just before 2 p.m. when he saw the shark appear next to him. It was larger than his 11-foot paddle board," the department said. COOK COUNTY, Illinois (AP) — A Michigan woman has been charged with murder in the deaths of her newborn twin sons more than 17 years after their bodies were found near Chicago.Authorities said Saturday that 41-year-old Antoinette Briley of Holland, Michigan, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her sons.The boys’ bodies were discovered on June 6, 2003, by a waste management employee who was emptying trash bins in Cook County, Illinois. Officers say the worker spotted the bodies in the front lift bucket.“A subsequent autopsy determined the victims were born alive and died of asphyxiation and the deaths were ruled homicides,” said Leo Schmitz, Chief of Public Safety at the Cook County Sheriff's Office, during a press conference.Using DNA technology, detectives eventually identified Briley as the victims’ potential birth mother.As part of their investigation, Schmitz says detectives traveled to Michigan and “obtained discarded items with Briley’s DNA,” which was then matched to the DNA of the newborn victims.On Thursday, officers say they learned Briley was in the Cook County area and took her into custody after a traffic stop in Oaklawn, Illinois. The suspect was transported to the sheriff’s headquarters, where Schmitz says she admitted to the “birth, death, and disposal” of the infants. 1351

CITRUS COUNTY, Florida — A woman was attacked by an alligator on Wednesday while she was swimming in a lake in Citrus County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.The FWC says 24-year-old Felicitie Marie Gillette was swimming in Lake Hernando around 1 a.m. when an alligator grabbed her by the left arm and began to drag her underwater. She was reportedly able to fight off the alligator and call 911 for help.Gillette was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital for treatment of her injuries. According to the FWC, she was treated and released. She sustained non-life threatening injuries.The alligator is believed to 5 to 6-feet long.The FWC and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office are working to catch the alligator. A trapper has also been called to the scene.The public beach access to Lake Hernando is closed while a wildlife trapper searches for the alligator.Families who visit the lake say they've seen an alligator swim along the beach's public access area."The alligator was on the hunt," said Dennis Weis. "You could tell by the aggressive movements by the alligator."Dennis Weis shared cell phone video with ABC Action News showing an alligator roaming in the water near the beach, just a few days before the attack. Weis believes that people were feeding the alligator."When the kids jumped into the water over there, he would go up over there, go under," said Weis.FWC says the victim is currently homeless.FWC wants to remind the public that if anyone believes a specific alligator poses a threat to people, pets or property, they should immediately call the toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR or 866-392-4286. 1667
