BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Friday that China hopes to advance the strategic cooperative partnership with the Republic of Korea (ROK).     "We will work with the ROK to increase friendly exchanges at various levels and enhance pragmatic cooperation in various sectors," Hu told Kim Hyong-o, speaker of the ROK National Assembly.     Hailing the smooth development of China-ROK ties in recent years, Hu said the leaders of the two nations had maintained frequent contacts, exchanged views often and reached broad consensus on important issues.     "This gives strong impetus to the growth of bilateral relations," Hu noted. COPENHAGEN, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here with U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday to discuss climate change.     Wen said climate change is a global challenge and an important field for cooperation between China and the United States.     The key to this issue is to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities," said Wen.     The Chinese government has announced its goal of controlling greenhouse gas emissions, which demonstrates China's sincerity and determination to deal with climate change, and work with the international community on this issue, said the Chinese premier. Therefore, China should not be required to adopt the same measures as the United States or other developed countries.     Obama said he appreciated China's willingness to have transparency on its voluntary emission reduction measures. The United States is ready to work with China for a successful Copenhagen climate change conference and to strengthen long-term cooperation in the fight against climate change.

URUMQI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A railway became operational Sunday in west China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region, which is expected to boost the transportation from China to central Asia and Europe, said local railway authorities.     The railway, called Second Urumqi-Jinghe Line, runs 381.5 km and links the region's capital Urumqi and Jinghe county. It has a designed transportation capacity of 67.1 million tonnes, which is expected to grow up to 91.7 million tonnes in the future. With a designed speed of 120 km per hour, the railway cost 2.77 billion yuan, according to a statement from Xinjiang Railway Bureau.     Jinghe is linked to Horgos and Alataw Pass, ports on the China-Kazakhstan border, by two other railways. One starts from Jinghe and ends at Horgos. The other runs from Urumqi through Jinghe to Alataw Pass.     The launch of the new railway would greatly enhance China's transportation capacity to Kazakhstan and further into other countries in central Asia and Europe, the statement said.

ASHGABAT, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here on Sunday with Uzbek President Islam Karimov to exchange views on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, and both leaders agreed to push forward bilateral ties. Hu is in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, for a working visit at the invitation of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.     As guests of Berdymukhamedov, Hu, Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev will attend a ceremony to inaugurate the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline on Monday. The entity has exerted an important role in promoting the stability of the Central Asian region and safeguarding the common interests of the member states, Hu said.     As the rotating chair state of the SCO, Uzbekistan has actively coordinated the body's development and made a series of significant proposals, Hu said, and such efforts were highly valued and readily bolstered by the Chinese side. China is also obliged and ready to assist Uzbekistan in the hosting of the SCO summit next year, Hu said.     Karimov, on his part, said the development of bilateral relations is not only conducive to the two countries, but is also of great significance to maintaining peace and stability in the Central Asian region.     He said China is a most reliable and trust-worthy friend of Uzbekistan. Since the heads of state of the two countries met in Yekaterinburg in Russia earlier this year, bilateral practical cooperation have made substantial progress and entered a new era of development, and bilateral trade has grown rapidly, with a broad prospect of cooperation in the areas of natural gas, mining and cotton.     Karimov said, in response to the worsening of the international financial crisis, the Chinese government has adopted a series of effective measures to resolve the difficulties faced by China's economy and played an important role in promoting the growth of the world economy.     He said, against the backdrop of profound and complicated changes in today's world, Uzbekistan is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields. He emphasized that Uzbekistan will adhere to the one-China policy and firmly support China's strike against the "three evil forces", "Taiwan independence" and "Tibet independence".     Karimov appreciated the major and active role that China has played in handling major international issues. He thanked China for its support to Uzbekistan in becoming the chair nation of the SCO.     He said Uzbekistan is ready to work with China to host a successful SCO summit in its capital of Teshkent next year.     Hu arrived in Ashgabat Sunday morning and will leave for home Monday.
