SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Food banks across San Diego say demand is up, and volunteering is down as the Coronavirus pandemic spreads."There are a lot of unknowns right now," says James Floros, the CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank.Floros says they've already had dozens of volunteer groups cancel their upcoming shifts, as the CDC and state and local governments advise against any large gatherings.Meanwhile, he says demand is skyrocketing, since many people are losing money from reduced shifts, or losing access to meals they get from work, communal gatherings or other places."We know a lot of the service industry are getting laid off, school closures, what have you," says Floros. "So, we're creating our plans to ramp up our service to the community."The Food Bank serves 350,000 people a year, providing food to numerous outreach groups who then distribute it to people who are food insecure.But as distributions become harder to coordinate with new social distancing guidelines, groups are having to rethink the way they get food to those who need it."we have to reinvent the paradigm and figure out ways to get food to people who are self-isolating," says Vince Hall, the CEO of Feeding San Diego. "Because they're complying with the edicts of health officials, but they're cut off from the food that keeps them healthy."Hall says his group has canceled all group volunteer events. But they're still allowing people to volunteer on an individual basis to help deliver food.The food banks also encourage donations."It makes me sad," says Hall. "Tragically, there are going to be more people in this community struggling with hunger because people can't go to work while they stay home to take care of kids while they can't go to school and there are going to be ripple effects throughout the economy."However, both Hall and Floros are hopeful that the community will make sure hunger doesn't compound the impact of the Coronavirus."We're not panicking, we're just rising to the occasion," says Floros."This is a moment when this community is going to come together, pull together, and bring resources to bear on a problem that's going to affect people across the entirety of the county," says Hall.To donate, go to feedingsandiego.org or sandiegofoodbank.org. 2285

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hospital leaders across San Diego County say they support Gov. Gavin Newsom's new regional stay-at-home order, which uses ICU bed capacity as the metric to impose stricter restrictions because of COVID-19."We're tight now. This is a serious situation, and we need everybody's help," said Scripps Health CEO Chris Van Gorder.Under the new order, if a region ever has less than 15% of its ICU beds available, the state would put an "emergency brake" in place, imposing more restrictions on businesses and activities.Van Gorder said several San Diego hospital leaders spoke with state health officials this week about the order and agreed the ICU metric was as good as any number to measure the severity of the pandemic.He said running out of ICU beds would devastate the hospital system, impacting anyone who needs critical care, not just COVID-19 patients."To be really blunt about it, people could die if we don't have the right equipment, beds and trained personnel to be able to take care of them when they have their emergency," Van Gorder said.A spokesperson from Sharp HealthCare echoed those sentiments, sending this statement to ABC 10News: "We want people to stay healthy and out of the hospital for COVID-19 by following safe practices so that ICU beds are available for patients who've been in serious accidents, cannot breathe on their own or had invasive surgeries."Van Gorder said grouping counties into regions make sense because many of them already fall under mutual aid agreements to help each other out."Imperial County is a classic example," he said. "Their hospitals back in July filled up very quickly, and San Diego was a lifeboat ... When you look at the broader region, there's a lot of hospitals within those regions, there may be some hospitals that aren't as impacted as other some other hospitals, so they're available and they're expected to take patients."According to state numbers, the Southern California region -- which San Diego County is a part of -- currently has 20.6% of their ICU beds available. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fixes are coming to elevators in a 14-story high-rise in downtown San Diego where senior tenants have faced challenges performing everyday tasks. But not soon enough for many.Some residents of the 65 and older Tower Apartments community have missed important appointments and had difficulties running errands, like trips to the grocery store, because of elevator outages.Some residents told 10News it's a long-running issue.RELATED: Seniors left with one elevator in 14-floor?San Diego buildingThe building is undergoing renovations - which residents say they appreciate. But they say the upgrades don't make it ok to shut down one of the two elevators and leave them with an elevator that they describe as unreliable at best. "Everybody is extremely upset," resident Carol Clark said. "And the thing is we don't seem to be getting many answers."One neighbor in a wheelchair broke down in tears during our interview. "It's people's safety," he said. "Not just mine, but everybody else."Shortly after running the story on 10News, management with the apartment complex sent a letter telling residents one of the elevators under renovations should be running by the end of June. After that, the other elevator that has had problems will be upgraded.Management said they will also schedule input meetings with residents for next week. 1372

Retail giants like Kohl’s and Target have announced huge holiday openings, with Kohl’s planning to hire 90,000 holiday associates. Target is also opening up 130,000 seasonal jobs. Although big box stores are hiring a lot of seasonal employees, local businesses are also increasing staffing. Rick Mitchell, owner of the Pumpkin Station Pumpkin Patch in Del Mar says he hires around 200 temporary workers in October – from high school students to retired veterans. According to experts, if you’re looking to cash in on seasonal work, the time to look is now. Sarah Burns with San Diego Workforce Partnership says adding a personal touch will help you stand out in the seasonal job market. “Can you go in person and introduce yourself to the manager. Say hi, I’m so and so and I’m really interested in working here. That will go a long way in a customer service focused industry,” Burns said.
