The COVID-19 pandemic has given a new perspective to many people across the world. For some women, it's made them consider whether the career they've chosen is the right one.A new survey by AllBright Collective, a membership-based club created by women that aims to provide inspiration, career coaching, networking and more for women around the world, shows many women are ready for a change."And so what we wanted to do was, rather than just guess what people were thinking, we wanted to do this global survey to really try and understand how women were thinking about their careers when we emerge," said Anna Jones, the CEO of AllBright Collective. "And we were actually very pleasantly surprised."Jones says AllBright surveyed 800 members during the pandemic, and 61% of them said they were going to be pivoting in their career."Now, that may mean pivoting to a different industry or different job, or it may be pivoting within the organization they're working in. But we were very pleasantly surprised that it was quite positive and women were very keen to kind of grab this time as an opportunity and make their ambitions a reality," Jones said.The survey also showed 25% of women were already in the process of changing their careers."I think we've all gotten used to working in a different way," Jones said. "We're all sitting on Zoom and connecting digitally in a way that we could never have imagined. I think for many women who wanted to work more flexibly, they're proving that they can."Elizabeth Middleton, a former teacher and mom of four, isn't surprised by the survey's results. She, too, is in the middle of a career change, starting her own business, Forward Function Health."It's been a major life shift," Middleton said. "I knew — and it wasn't just because of this pandemic, fortunately — before the pandemic, I was making this shift. But the pandemic just confirmed that it's the best for my family and self, and I think the pandemic has woken everybody up. The coronavirus pandemic may have started earlier than previously thought, according to scientists from the CDC.A study from government scientists published November 30 appears to confirm what some health experts have suggested, patients infected with COVID-19 were in the US before the beginning of 2020.“The findings of this report suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infections may have been present in the U.S. in December 2019, earlier than previously recognized. These findings also highlight the value of blood donations as a source for conducting SARS-CoV-2 surveillance studies,” the report states.The first officially documented case of COVID-19 in the US was reported on January 19, a person who had returned to the US after traveling from China.The World Health Organization was alerted to the novel coronavirus by officials in Wuhan, China on December 31, 2019. The CDC researchers say further reports have identified a patient in Wuhan with COVID-19 symptoms as early as December 1, 2019.The study looked at more than 7,000 routine blood donation samples taken by the American Red Cross from people in nine states between December 13, 2019 and January 17, 2020.They found COVID-19 antibodies in 106 samples, mostly from the states of California, Oregon and Washington, from blood collected between December 13-16, 2019. Other samples that indicated COVID-19 antibodies were from Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin taken in early January 2020.“The presence of these serum antibodies indicate that isolated SARS-CoV-2 infections may have occurred in the western portion of the United States earlier than previously recognized or that a small portion of the population may have pre-existing antibodies that bind SARS-CoV-2,” the report states.Scientists acknowledge that patients presenting with what is now known as COVID-19 symptoms before mid-January would likely not have had clinical samples taken or kept because of how new the virus was. The colors of an autumn afternoon can be serene, brilliant and breathtaking.“As the days start getting shorter and the nights get longer, that's the cue that the trees get to change the foliage,” said climate scientist Astrid Caldas.That foliage requires a delicate dance of temperature and moisture to produce fall colors. It’s a dance potentially now in jeopardy due to climate change.“Because these things -- temperature and precipitation, rainfall -- are being affected, changed by climate, then the fall foliage can really get affected,” said Caldas, who is a senior climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit science organization.She said long-term shifting temperature trends and more rain will be disruptive to fall foliage in certain parts of the country.“We are seeing extreme precipitation increase, particularly in the Northeast and the Midwest,” Caldas said.That precipitation was evident in Minnesota, where people found themselves caught off-guard this year by an unusually early snowfall."I had to completely disassemble my fall leaf clean-up box and make sure my plow is still working,” said Greg Futchi, who is a landscape contractor. “We usually get all the leaves down before we see some snow, but not this year."All of that added moisture can lead to a shorter fall foliage season, Caldas said. It’s also going to potentially affect where those trees grow in the first place.“When the conditions start changing --like it's starting to get warmer further and further north--well, that's also a possibility that species are going to start migrating farther north,” Caldas said. “So, as different trees start moving to different areas, then the colors may change because the color depends on the tree.”That may mean having to travel farther north to see stunning red maples. The FBI has taken custody of multiple suspicious packages sent to military locations in the Washington, DC area, a law enforcement official said Monday. The official said two of the packages were sent to Fort Belvoir and Fort McNair.At least one package, sent to the National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington, DC, contained explosive material and was ultimately rendered safe. That package arrived at 8:30 a.m. ET and the building was evacuated immediately, according to Army spokesman Michael L. Howard."At 12:10 p.m., 52nd Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal from Fort Belvoir, VA, confirmed the package tested positive for black powder and residue," Howard said in a statement. "The X-ray conducted indicates suspected GPS and an expedient fuse were attached. The package was rendered safe. No injuries are reported."Scanning machines at the facilities detected the suspicious materials upon receipt and the packages are being examined at the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia, the law enforcement official said.The National Defense University at Fort McNair was cleared for re-entry after K-9 sweep and personnel returned to the building by 1:15 pm ET.Another Army spokesman confirmed a suspicious package incident at Fort Belvoir and said that package has been rendered safe. 1296
