(KGTV) -- Orange County residents Wednesday took to social media to post photos of the blackened sky caused by the Holy Fire, which continues to grow. According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the blaze exploded in size Thursday and is still only five percent contained. Photos posted to social media show the massive fire burning in the distance as thick, gray smoke fills the sky. Scroll through the images below:  454

(KGTV) -- President Trump is threatening to take education money away from California schools.Trump said Sunday that the Department of Education was investigating allegations that California schools incorporate a curriculum based on the controversial New York Times 1619 Project.Trump warned that institutions that teach this alternative narrative of American history could lose federal funding. The NYT collection reframes American history around August 1619, when the first slave ship arrived on America's shores. The Times' 1619 project won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary, and the Pulitzer Center has since developed a package that allows schools to teach the project’s lessons.California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond released a statement in response to the president's threat to withhold funding, calling it a threat to divide the country:"President Trump’s latest announcement is a petty and disgraceful threat designed to distract and further divide our country at a time when we need true leadership that can unite us. California’s educators should feel empowered to lead courageous conversations with their students about the history of race and racism in our country—not worry if their school will lose funding. At the California Department of Education, we will continue to encourage school districts to talk about racism and unconscious bias in all forms. That includes building training programs to help our 10,000 schools address the impacts of implicit bias and race in our schools. We are also developing a first-in-the-nation statewide ethnic studies model curriculum that all of our school districts can use as a guide for classroom instruction that will shine a long-overdue light on the contributions of people of color. This is the kind of work our president is sadly trying to derail, yet is so critical to moving forward and healing from racial injustice. It’s time for the president to stop stoking racial divisions for political gain.”Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican, has introduced legislation that would prevent schools from teaching the curriculum. The legislation titled the Saving American History Act of 2020 would prohibit the use of federal funds to teach the 1619 Project by K-12 schools or school districts.Schools that teach the 1619 Project would also be ineligible for federal professional-development grants. The legislation appears unlikely to gain any significant traction in the Senate but stands as a way for Cotton to send a message. 2516

A 17-year-old victim in a series of deadly package bombs delivered to homes in Austin, Texas, was identified Tuesday as Draylen Mason, as a law enforcement source revealed the same person may have constructed the three devices.Mason, described by Austin Police Chief Brian Manley as an "outstanding young man who was going places with his life," was killed when a package on the porch of a Texas home exploded Monday morning. His mother is in stable condition. The name of a 75-year-old woman wounded in a second incident Monday has not been released. The bombings have shaken residents and cast suspicion on one of life's common occurrences: getting a package delivered to your doorstep. One of the explosive packages was brought indoors and yielded parts that could be reconstructed, according to the law enforcement source. The devices were essentially pipe bombs rigged to explode upon opening, the source said. The three package bombs have exploded at homes in the Texas capital over 10 days, killing two people and injuring two others. Investigators say they believe the incidents are related, and residents have responded anxiously in the past day.Austin police have received 265 calls about suspicious packages, Manley said Tuesday, though police haven't indicated any subsequent check revealing anything alarming."What caused this in these instances was a suspicious package that no one was suspecting or expecting," Austin Mayor Steve Adler said Tuesday. "I want everyone in my community, if they see something that's suspicious -- a package or otherwise -- I want them to pick up the phone and call 911." 1625

(KGTV) -- New cases of the coronavirus are being discovered in Vietnam, in the same port as where 6,500 sailors and Marines on the USS Theodore Roosevelt are docked. The USS Theodore Roosevelt left Coronado on Jan. 17, 2020, for a seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific. Now, seven weeks later, she is docked in Da Nang, Vietnam. Former U.S. Army Sgt. Patrick Furman lives in Hanoi. He still keeps up with military affairs in Vietnam. "This is only the second time that a carrier visited Vietnam post the war," Furman said. He said this special visit on March 5, 2020, celebrating 25 years of normalization, is being overshadowed by fears of the coronavirus. The country went 22 days with no new infections, but on Friday, Vietnamese health officials discovered nine new cases, all from foreign tourists. "Literally, the country was ready to announce that they had conquered this virus. That it had been eradicated. And then within 24 hours, all of this happens," Furman said. Vietnamese media reported that two British tourists who tested positive for coronavirus were intercepted and quarantined in Da Nang. It's the same city that now hosts the USS Theodore Roosevelt. "The British, being tourists, most likely went to all the same places that sailors and Marines on liberty would probably want to go," Furman said. According to the USS Theodore Roosevelt Public Affairs, Sailors were scheduled to participate in cultural and professional exchanges, community service projects, sports competitions, and receptions during their port visit. It is unclear if any of the 6,500 sailors and Marines came into contact with the infected individuals in Da Nang. 10News reached out to the US State Department to ask if any of the service members fell ill or if they had to cancel any of their visitation schedules because of the virus. As of Sunday afternoon, we have not heard back. 1889
