HAWTHORNE (CNS) - A Hawthorne police officer was wounded and a person has been arrested in connection with an officer-involved shooting this morning.Officers were dispatched about 9:20 a.m. to the 14400 block of Aviation Boulevard, where the shooting occurred, according to a watch commander at the Hawthorne Police Department.The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was called about 9:30 a.m. to assist in the investigation, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau. Paramedics rushed the wounded officer to an area hospital, and a person has been detained in connection with the shooting, he said.It was unclear if the person being detained was the shooter, he said. A witness at the scene told reporters he saw the suspect pull his gun out and heard ``tons of gunfire.''Authorities urged the public to avoid the area of Rosecrans and Aviation. 863

(AP) — Police in Alabama on Saturday were searching for a gunman whom they believe was responsible for shooting two teenagers at a shopping mall on Thanksgiving night.The incident began with a fight and shooting in suburban Birmingham at the Riverchase Galleria, a mall crowded with Black Friday bargain hunters. An 18-year-old was shot twice and a 12-year-old bystander was shot in the back.An officer responding to the scene then shot and killed 21-year-old Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford, Jr. of Hueytown. Police said Bradford was fleeing the scene and was brandishing a weapon.Police initially told reporters they thought Bradford had shot the teen after a fight but retracted that statement Friday night."New evidence now suggests that while Mr. Bradford may have been involved in some aspect of the altercation, he likely did not fire the rounds that injured the 18-year-old victim," Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector said in a statement.Police said they "regret that our initial media release was not totally accurate."Rector said investigators now believe that more than two people were involved in the initial fight ahead of the shooting, and that "at least one gunman" is still at large who could be responsible for the shooting of an 18-year-old male and 12-year-old female.Video posted on social media by shoppers showed a chaotic scene as shoppers fled the mall, which closed for the remainder of Thursday night.The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken the lead role in the investigation since it is an officer-involved shooting.Hoover police asked for anyone with information, photos or video evidence of this crime scene to please contact investigators.A witness, Lexi Joiner, told Al.com she was shopping with her mother when the gunfire started. GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Several dozen students interrupted an event featuring actress Jenna Fischer at DePauw University Tuesday to protests recent racial incidents on and near campus.Many of them held signs with things claiming they are "afraid for their lives" after recent events. Fischer, star of the sicoms "The Office" and "Splitting Up Together" was at the university to discuss her new book, "The Actor's Life: A Survivor's Guide."University Spokesman Ken Owen, who was moderating the lecture with Fischer, said about 15 minutes into the program a group of students got up and began interrupting the event whistling, shouting and saying they were afraid for their safety on campus because of the recent racial incidents. Last week, a hateful message was found written in a bathroom at the university. The message, which read " All ******* must die -KKK," was written on a bathroom wall of the Inn at DePauw, a public building on campus. Another anti-Semitic and homophobic messages were also found. The video above was captured during the Tuesday evening protests by Shannon Samson. Another event being investigated by the university involves a hateful slur written in rocks at the DePauw nature park, which is owned by the university. Owen said there was a meeting with the school president Tuesday over the events and that have happened up until that point and they expect more meetings in the future. DePauw University issued the following statement on social media after the event.  1573
