SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - A man was arrested Thursday after entering a North County bank, telling everyone inside to get on the floor, announcing that he was robbing the premises and directing workers to make a 911 call to report the crime-in-process. The odd robbery scare at the Wells Fargo branch office in the 200 block of Santa Helena in Solana Beach began just after 9 a.m., according to sheriff's officials. The perpetrator -- a thin, roughly 6-foot man who appeared to be in his 30s, wearing a black hooded jacket with the cowl pulled up over his head -- entered the bank minutes after it opened and promptly made his series of demands, Lt. Karla Menzies said. He issued no threats of violence and displayed no weapons during the takeover, the lieutenant said. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, hate-related incidents directed towards Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have risen drastically.According to Stop Asian-American and Pacific Islander Hate, an advocacy group working to raise awareness about the issue, 2,538 have been documented since March.The group, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says incidents are self-reported, as well as taken from news reports across the country.“Surveys have shown that over three-quarters of Asian Americans are aware and fear racial bias at the moment,” said Russell Jeung, a professor of Asian-American Studies at San Francisco State University, who tracks the incidents for Stop AAPI Hate.Jeung says his research has found the President Donald Trump’s use of the term “China virus” is having a direct impact on the harassment, as 30 percent of the incidents reported say the language used has mirrored the president’s.“We’re seeing vulnerable populations being targeted,” said Jeung. “Women are harassed 2.4 times more than men. Youth make up 14 percent of our cases so that means there’s a lot of school bullying going on, a lot of online cyber-bullying."“We’ve seen incidents of spitting, vandalism, hostility towards Asian-owned businesses during this time,” said Jay Cheng, a member of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.Two months ago four Asian-owned businesses were vandalized and robbed in the city’s Outer Balboa neighborhood, one of San Francisco’s most diverse areas. SIGNAL HILL (CNS) - A single-engine airplane made a safe landing on a street near Long Beach Airport today, with no injuries reported.The airplane, which had just taken off from the airport, set down about 10:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of Orange Avenue, said airport spokeswoman Cassie Chauvel.The Long Beach Fire Department said in a Twitter posting that the plane ``lost power shortly after performing a touch and go off runway 26L.''The pilot was unhurt, and there was no damage to the plane, according to the LBFD.The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the pilot was the lone occupant of the Piper PA28. 625

Should you pay sales tax on your online purchases?Chances are good you already do, even though the law requires online retailers to collect the tax only in states where they have a physical presence.Amazon and Walmart, two of the giants of online retailing, collect sales tax on all their sales in the 45 states that have a statewide sales tax.But many other smaller retailers don't collect sales tax unless they have a physical presence in the state where the buyer lives, relying on a 26-year old Supreme Court decision that was related to catalog retailers. Many of the sales on Amazon's and Walmart's sites are actually done by smaller retailers using those sites as their platform. For example, Amazon says half of the sales on the site are by small and medium size retailers.On Tuesday the Supreme Court is hearing arguments whether to overturn its 1992 decision when it hears a new case focused on online purchases, South Dakota vs. Wayfair.A reversal could mean that all online retailers must collect sales tax everywhere. Wayfair argues more than 16,000 different taxing units could demand sales tax collections.South Dakota says it is looking to start collecting taxes only for future online sales, but But Wayfair's attorneys argue in court filings that many other states and local governments could demand years of back sales taxes, forcing retailers to go through costly audits of past sales and make back payments that could bankrupt some companies."South Dakota's choice to forego its remedy for back taxes in the event that the Court were to overrule [existing law] will not limit the retroactive application of such a ruling with respect to other state and local jurisdictions," said Wayfair's attorneys.And while the issue is portrayed as one of fairness for small brick-and-mortar retailers that have to compete against online retailers, experts say those small retailers could be among the ones that get hurt.Many small retailers depend on online sales. John Lewis.The board voted Thursday to rename Robert E.
