CHANGCHUN, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Civilians were mobilized Friday to join exhausted soldiers and emergency workers struggling against mounting difficulties to retrieve thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major northeast China river by flood waters two days ago.Some 3,000 full barrels and 4,000 empty ones were swept into the Wende River and on to the Songhua River after floods hit warehouses of two chemical factories in Jilin City, Jilin Province, early Wednesday.As of 6 p.m. Friday, 3,700 of the about 7,000 containers have been retrieved, according to a statement from the provincial government.Provincial authorities vowed to retrieve all the containers before they flow out of Hadashan Reservoir on the lower reaches of Songhua River in Jilin's Songyuan City.However, salvage workers fear some of the barrels, many filled with 170 kilograms of flammable liquid, may have sunk to the bottom of the Songhua River, raising serious risks of lingering water contamination.Chemical barrels were also spotted lying unattended in the debris of flood-devastated villages.At 2 p.m. Friday, the Fengman Reservoir, on a tributary of the Songhua River and 24 km southeast of Jilin City, opened floodgates to discharge flood waters.The water flow at each gate peaked at 800 cubic meters per second around 4 p.m., and at least thousands of residents had been evacuated over Thursday night and Friday morning.Workers said the move might help speed up salvage efforts by washing away floating debris, such as trash, weeds and tree branches, which had hampered the work.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's health chiefs Tuesday renewed their commitment to providing the country with iodized salt and refuted concerns of excessive iodine intake.Chen Rui, an official with China's Health Ministry, said at a press conference that the benefits of iodized salt still outweighed the concerns of excessive iodine, citing the results of nationwide risk assessment of iodine intake led by the ministry.The assessment was carried out in response to claims from media and medical experts that some regions, coastal areas in particular, reported cases of excessive iodine intake since last year.Chen said iodized salt was still essential in China.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient.Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.Chen Junshi, a research fellow with China CDC involved in the assessment, said even in coastal areas the risk of iodine deficiency still loomed larger than excessive intake.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing, local civil affairs authorities said Tuesday afternoon.Some 1,243 people have been rescued, Tian Baozhong, head of the provincial civil affairs department, told a news conference.Of them, 58 who were seriously injured had been hospitalized, Ma Chengyang, deputy director of the provincial publicity department, told another press briefing Tuesday night.Torrential rain on Saturday night prompted an avalanche of sludge and debris to crash down on the county seat of Zhouqu early Sunday morning, ripping many houses off their foundations and tearing multi-story apartment buildings in half.The mud-rock flow has leveled an area of about 5 km long, 300 meters wide and 5 meters deep in the county seat with more than 2 million cubic meters of mud and rocks, severely damaging power, telecommunication and water supply facilities.About 45,000 residents have been evacuated, as mudslides have destroyed more than 300 homes and damaged another 700. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Long March and its legacy had contributed to shaping an extraordinary China, said former U.S. national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, when he called upon the headquarter of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) in Beijing on Monday.His meeting with senior Chinese military leader Xu Caihou started with the memory of the Long March which set Brzezinski in mind of his trip to retrace the Long March in 1981."I learned you had retraced China' s Long March with your family before and your wife is a well-known sculptor," said Xu, who showed Brzezinski around the meeting hall where a set of stone carvings were placed portraying the Chinese Red Army and their epic Long March from 1934 to 1936."Currently China's modern construction and its reform cause are another new Long March, and to stick to a peaceful development road is China's long-term and strategic choice," said Xu, CMC Vice Chairman.Brzezinski, who served under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981, had retraced part of the route of the Long March with his family when visiting China in July of 1981.After that China tour, he wrote an article for the Life Magazine titled "An American Family Retraces Mao's Long March", in which he said "For the emerging new China, the Long March is more than an epic of almost unmatched heroism. It is the reminder of the spirit of national unity essential to overcome the legacy of backwardness."Looking around each of the stone carving with great interest, Brzezinski said the "incredible" and "superb" works had reminded him of his China visits over the years, in particular, the trip to review the Long March.These experience helped me to better understand China and some of its historical events, said the 82-year-old strategist.The Long March was a famous military maneuver carried out by the Chinese Red Army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to combat the Kuomintang Regime.Though many soldiers died on the way of the two-year ordeal, the Red Army finally arrived at Yan'an in western Shaanxi Province after the 25,000-li (12,500-kilometer) trek, where the new headquarters of CPC was later established.Brzezinski said all these historical events had helped to shape an extraordinary China.In his two-hour-long meeting with Xu, Brzezinski stressed the United States and China should have all-round strategic dialogues and strengthen coordination and contact, and work for the peace and stability of the world.Xu agreed the two sides should properly handle bilateral relations and international issues to their mutual benefit instead of as a zero-sum game."More than 30 years of China-U.S. relations have proved the two countries can co-exist peacefully and enjoy common development. China's development will expand cooperation between the two countries," Xu added.Brzezinski is visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese International Institute for Strategic Society.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) - At least 47 people have been killed and 45 others remain missing in floods that have hit northeast China's Jilin Province since July 24, Jilin's civil affairs department said Saturday.In addition, about 375,000 people have been evacuated and 25,800 buildings collapsed due to the floods, with economic loss on account of flooding reaching nearly 4 billion yuan (590 million U.S. dollars), the department said in a statement.More heavy rains are expected from Aug. 3 to 4, according to local weather forecast.
