SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County officials warn we may officially drop into the dreaded, most restrictive, purple tier next week due to the rising COVID-19 case rate.“This is not a rollback, this is a devastation,” said Jon Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop in the East Village. “The same metrics that work in smaller counties don’t necessarily work in larger counties.”Under the state’s purple tier, restaurants would have to close indoor dining and move outside. Right now, in the red tier, they’re allowed to operate inside at 25% capacity.“We’re on 10th Avenue, we don’t have any space to put any outdoor seating, we’re on a busy street,” said Weber, who got through the first shutdown with PPP money, which is now gone.“If we close, we may never open again,” he said. “The idea of laying off 50 employees right before the holidays is pretty hard.”Other restaurants able to operate outside worry rain and cold weather will keep customers from dining outdoors.“There’s going to be challenges with cold weather, some of this stuff is just out of our control,” said Cesar Vallin, the managing partner at Cloak & Petal. “If you stay open, now you’re opened illegally, now you open yourself up to lawsuits from staff, ABC can come in and take your liquor license.”Like Weber, Vallin also worries about layoffs when moving from the red to the purple tier.“It’s not a light switch, I have to lay everybody off properly and then bring people back on, and not everybody comes back,” said Vallin. “There’s no support from the government, they’re still asking us for employment taxes, they’re still asking us for sales taxes; It’s a major letdown.”Under the red tier, gyms and fitness centers can operate inside at 10% capacity.Scott Lutwak, the founder and CEO of FIT Athletic Club, said that capacity is already a difficulty at his five locations across the county.“We’re mortified at the concept of moving into that purple tier, which represents us at zero capacity, being closed 100 percent,” said Lutwak.“We’ve been conducting classes outside regardless of weather, but now it gets dark earlier,” he said. “In our facilities, we have millions of dollars’ worth of really extensive equipment that can’t be brought outside because as soon as you bring it outside with saltwater air, you can’t bring it back inside.”He said right now he does not plan on shutting down inside or moving equipment outside.“As long as I feel like I can provide a safe environment for my employees and safe environment for my members, which we have proven we’re able to do so, I think we have every intention on keeping our doors open until we’re forced to do otherwise.”Lutwak said he believes his centers are essential, and therefore should be able to remain open.“We’re providing rehabilitation services, we consider our facilities as essential, and we have sent some letters out to each of the mayors in the cities where we’re conducting business,” he said he has yet to hear back.Besides restaurants and fitness centers, houses of worship, movie theaters, museums, zoos, and aquariums would also have to end indoor operations.San Diego County will find out next week if we have officially moved back into the purple tier. 3240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican whose term ends next month, revealed he is considering running for governor in an interview Thursday with the Los Angeles Times.The race will be tough for any Republican, according to political analyst John Dadian, because registered Democrats far outnumber Republicans in California. Those registered with no party preference also outnumber Republicans. “The uphill is he’d have to pull in all the people that are neither democrat or republican, but it’s certainly possible," Dadian said.According to Dadian, many political pundits consider Faulconer to be the most viable Republican in a general election, citing his record as a moderate mayor who frequently cross the aisle to work with Democrats on issues such as climate change. Faulconer's PAC raised more than 0,000 in the first half of the year, with the biggest donations coming from outside San Diego, which Dadian says is another indication of Faulconer's viability.Dadian says he expects Faulconer to spend much of his time traveling the state once he leaves office to build his profile and introduce himself to voters away from his home base. San Diego businesses operating outdoors for the pandemic are making plans to stay dry.Since the pandemic started businesses in San Diego have had to get creative to stay afloat.Arthur Boia started PB Yogs as a way for yoga instructors to safely continue classes outdoors.“The thing with us is we’re yogi’s so we’re very flexible,” said Boia. “Whatever it takes.”They hold daily classes at Hospitality Point in Mission Bay where they implement temperature checks and social distancing.Boia says outdoor classes have been working out well under San Diego sunshine, but rain this weekend might pose some challenges.“If for some reason it starts raining and we have to cancel a class we’ll cancel it,” said Boia. “But as soon as it clears up, we’re gonna run right back out here and do yoga.”With rainy season underway, he’s looking for other ways to keep the yoga flowing.“When I was thinking of a tent, I was thinking to close off the back area so you can protect from the wind a little bit, but we also want to have good airflow for COVID reasons. As for the rain, that’s just something we’re gonna have to go by day-by-day," Boia said.Belmont Park is another business with outdoor operations.“We have our new go-kart track, our rock climbing wall, zip line, mini golf,” said Senior Marketing Manager Daniela Bower.The Belmont Park Harvest Walk event runs every Saturday through Nov. 14. Bower says they may have to cancel this weekend.“Even just for safety we can’t operate a lot of things when it’s raining,” said Bower.She adds after a year like 2020, wet weather will just add insult to injury.“It’s already been a struggle for us to be able to open in the first place, so it definitely kind of stings a little bit when we have to close for other reasons,” said Bower.Bower says they’ll make the call Friday afternoon on whether or not to cancel Saturday’s event.The City of San Diego is offering free sandbags in each City Council District. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue crews removed a body from Chollas Lake Monday, fire officials said. The man, identified only as Hispanic and in his mid- to late 20s, was found about noon at the lake at 5850 College Grove Drive in the Oak Park neighborhood. Brianna Yasel and her friends were at the lake and realized something was wrong."I couldn't tell what it was; it looked like a rock to me. Once they pulled it out and flipped it over, my friend was able to see the hand at first and it did look like he was under the water for a while. He just didn't look too good," said Yasel."The body was discovered almost in the center of the lake; a passerby said it looked somewhat suspicious. He noticed it moved by an rock cropping," said San Diego Police Lt. Ernesto Servin.San Diego Police are investigating to determine the cause of death and the man’s identity, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The Medical Examiner was also called to the scene.Chollas Lake, which served as a reservoir from 1901 to 1966, is open during daylight hours for recreation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 625 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the region's second-highest daily increase of cases reported by officials.San Diego County's new cases reported a 6% positive rate out of 10,290 tests. Of the county's cases, 2,180 (9.4%) have needed hospitalization. Health officials add that 2.5% of all cases and 26% of hospitalized cases have been moved to the ICU.An additional six deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported, the county said. The deaths occurred between July 8 and July 16, and included four women and two men whose ages ranged from 60 to mid-90s. All had existing chronic conditions, the county said.
