SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents with students in the San Diego Unified School District are concerned after finding out the state medical board subpoenaed doctors who wrote their students medical exemptions for vaccinations.The district’s physician, Dr. Howard Taras, tells 10News, “We have many more medical exemptions over the past two years than we’ve ever had before.”Taras worked with the district for 30 years and says the increase in medical exemptions concerned him, so he brought it to the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.“I gave them loose data, like how many kids in the school district had medical exemptions that any doctor would see as a very worthwhile reason and how many were coming from doctors that were not very sound reasons in common medical practice," Taras said.The committee then took that list to the Medical Board of California. Now, parents in the district are upset knowing their child was included in a list sent to the state.“I’m absolutely appalled at the irresponsibility to have compiled this list in the first place. This is nothing that should have ever been getting out," a mother who did not want to be identified told 10News.10News learned the medical board is now investigating and has already subpoenaed 32 doctors who wrote medical exemptions for students in the district. A parent shared the letter that was sent home with their student with 10News. The letter states the information being subpoenaed includes:1. The unredacted copy of medical vaccination exemption letters 2. The name and date of birth of all children with medical vaccination exemption 3. The name(s) of the parent and/or legal guardian 4. The contact information of the parent and/or legal guardian “This is a violation of FERPA this is 100 percent unethical and I would say illegal based upon what’s taken place," a parent said.The district’s litigation specialist explains all parents have the right to seek protective action to prevent the disclosure of records. “If some of the actions that I and the medical board have taken lead to fewer medical exemptions, I really truly believe we will save people from fatality," said Taras.A representative with the state medical board responded to our request for more information saying, “The Board does not provide information on its complaints and investigations as both are confidential by law.” 2398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly a week full of films by military veterans, focusing on a variety of topics is coming to San Diego this month.The GI Film Festival runs Sept. 24-29, bringing together a community of passionate filmmakers, the military veteran community, and those who support them to showcase works in cinema and educate and preserve the legacies of veterans.Festival organizers say their mission is to ensure that the stories of military veterans and their families are told and show future generations the triumphs and sacrifices they endure.The festival also works as a bridge, connection military and civilian populations together through cinema and mutual understanding. All of this works as a way to help veterans heals as well.Last year, the six-day film festival opened with a film starring George Takei, about a veteran who spent time in a Japanese-American internment camp, and also featured films by stars like actor Jeffrey Wright. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, the California National Guard confirmed that its service members were recently sent to two San Diego nursing homes that needed help treating residents who were sick with COVID-19.“We supplemented their existing staff- their civilian staff- with our medical teams here in the California National Guard,” Lt. Col. Jonathan Shiroma told ABC10 and said that they were deployed at the direction of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).The National Guard reports that 20 troops were sent to Santee's Stanford Court nursing facility for a week in October and another 20 troops were sent to El Cajon's Villa Las Palmas for two weeks in November.Lt. Col. Shiroma said teams tested patients and staff and offered other supportive care. “Within the Guard we also have many medical professionals so each of the teams were led by either a physician assistant or a registered nurse or an LPN,” he added.“If you have an outbreak, you have staff that has to quarantine and so in order to provide care you want to get people into the building to help with the residents,” Deborah Pacyna with the California Association of Health Facilities told ABC10 News.The CDPH reports that since the start of the pandemic, 50 healthcare workers have tested positive at the El Cajon facility where 91 residents have gotten the virus and 45 healthcare workers have tested positive at the Santee facility where 58 residents have contracted COVID-19.The National Guard said that it doesn't have any current missions in San Diego but it's always ready. “If something comes in the next few weeks and there’s a need in any part of the state, the California National Guard will respond appropriately,” added Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of La Jolla's most scenic spots is also the scene of a 20 year battle that has left the community divided.The Coastal Commission voted unanimously Thursday night to approve a measure to renew a 10-year permit to close the Children's Pool to human access during Harbor Seal Pupping season.The Children's Pool was built in 1931 to give kids a safe place to enjoy the beach.In the late 1990's, harbor seals moved in on the area creating conflict.Surveillance cameras captured visitors getting dangerously close to the seals causing the city to take action.In 2014, they decided to close the Children's Pool from December 15th through May 15th. This is typically the time period when mother seals use the beach to birth their calves.The California Coastal Commission agreed to try out this plan for five years.Dr. Jane Reldan, President of the Seal Conservancy, said the beach closure was an "elegant compromise." Reldan added that the closure happens during a time of year when it's cold and people don't want to go swimming anyways.Opponents say there's plenty of coastline for the seals to use and that it's time the Children's pool was given back to the kids. 1190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the most controversial developments in San Diego's recent history is now welcoming its first residents.The One Paseo development has leased about 60 of its planned 608 housing units, most of which are still under construction.The complex aims to put everything within the reach of its residents in a live, work, play environment. The model units are even staged to make the most discriminating apartment shopper feel right at home. The fridge is stocked with sodas, candy, snacks, and even beer. "If you come here, it's like living on a vacation everyday," said Jay Rey-Hiplito, Kilroy's vice president. Rey-Hipolito says with San Diego's supply crunch, renters are willing to live in dense apartment complexes like One Paseo. He says they are increasingly looking at the housing units as places where they rest, spending their leisure time and entertaining at the amenities. The complex includes two pools (one saltwater), a community room, and an expansive gym. In all, that's why he believes the price is right for the units. Studios start at ,350 a month, and the model two-bedroom, at 1,058 square feet, goes for between ,600 and ,800 a month."Instead of looking at price, it's important to focus on value," Rey-Hiploito said. The San Diego City Council approved a larger version in 2015, but nearby residents, and the owners of the mall across the street, led a referendum that ended with the current scaled down development.
