SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It has now been seven months since the pandemic began, and there are still a lot of questions about the best ways to treat patients with COVID-19.Researchers at UC San Diego are leading an effort to produce swift and reliable answers that could help doctors tailor treatments and hospitals plan bed space more efficiently.Doctors agree: the best way to fight any disease is to tailor the treatment for each individual based on their age, gender, race and other factors. But how does one doctor do that with a new disease like COVID-19, especially if their hospital has only seen a few hundred cases?“There might be some patterns you can get from 500 patients but there might be some others that you cannot,” said UCSD professor Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado, chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics.Dr. Ohno-Machado’s solution? Pool data.She’s leading the charge behind COVID19questions.org, a collaboration between 12 medical systems spanning more than 200 hospitals across the country.The collaboration includes several University of California health systems, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and the largest organization in the cohort, the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.“Each hospital is a little small to answer the questions. So by having it all together, we get the answers quicker,” said Ohno-Machado.They’re going after answers on how long patients with diabetes or cancer stay in the hospital, and whether COVID-19 is deadlier for smokers or non-smokers.Their findings revealed that men are much more likely to wind up on a ventilator than women.And they quantified just how much better we’ve gotten at treating COVID-19 over time.Since May 1, hospital stays among surviving patients have shrunk more than 10 days on average. That’s important for hospital managers planning and predicting bed space.“We decided to open this to the public and to our colleagues, and then we pick which answers have not been answered before and seem to be of most general interest,” Dr. Ohno-Machado explained.If this sounds like a straightforward approach, it’s not. Patient confidentiality laws make it hard for hospitals to share data and the information released by the CDC is limited.Maintaining patient confidentiality while sharing granular data is the most groundbreaking feature of the collaboration, called Reliable Response Data Discovery or known by its Star Wars-inspired acronym, R2D2.UCSD said R2D2 differs from other patient databases and registries because each health system maintains control of data rather than sharing it in a central repository. Through advanced computer techniques, each partner agency shares aggregated data, not patient-level information.The collaboration’s research is based on what’s called “observational data,” so Dr. Ohno-Machado said it’s not a replacement for a randomized, controlled clinical trial, which takes time. The pandemic nearly derailed a local museum’s yearly family event.“This year is the 75th year of the creation of the book series, called ‘The Railway series,’ where Thomas was born,” said Katy Titus with the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.The Balboa Park museum hosts a Thomas Day Celebration every year. Thousands of kids, families, and train lovers stop at “Big Station” for the big event. Unfortunately, this year will be different.“Instead of Thomas taking over the physical museum, Thomas is going to take over our web presence,” says Titus.Thomas Takeover Week will run until Sunday. It’s a free virtual event.Visitors can explore the virtual exhibit. There are activities online for kids like arts and crafts. Students can also enjoy storytime, listening to “The Railway Series.”The San Diego Model Railroad Museum had to close its doors twice this year due to the pandemic. Nothing will ruin your night more than finding out your car's been towed.That's exactly what's happened more than 1,000 times since the city converted Fifth Avenue to a three-minute passenger loading zone after 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in September 2016. "They really don't ask questions around here," said Vanessa Figueroa, who hands out fliers for Gaslamp BBQ on the corner of 5th and Island every Friday and Saturday nights. "If you're parked here, your car's gone."The city made the change to reduce gridlock, boost emergency response times, and make passenger drop-offs safer. But that's also meant a lot of towing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jim Jennings has spent the last nearly 20 years living on a street corner just a short walk from San Diego State University. "It's very vibrant, it keeps me young," he says. It's a community Jennings has seen grow, along with the university. Now, many of the homes around his are rented out to groups of students. The number of residents increased even more because the city has streamlined permitting for companion units, such as backyard granny flats or converted garages. The goal is to add to the housing supply amid a steep supply shortage. Jennings, a member of the area's planning board, says the concern that it will make a severe parking crunch even tighter once school starts next month is now the talk of the neighborhood."I don't want to move," he says. "I just want to be able to park in my neighborhood."The system in place aims to guarantee he is able to, but now it may be part of the problem. For decades, the only daytime street parking in the neighborhood south of the campus has been allowed by permit. Each residence is eligible for up to four, which can be used for visitors. The permit system, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., prevents SDSU students from parking in the neighborhood for free and going to class. Now, a memo from City Attorney Mara Elliott says people who live in companion units can't be treated any differently than those in a traditional home. Their dwelling may be in someone's backyard, but it comes with its own address, and therefore is eligible for four additional parking permits. In other words, a parcel with a granny flat or companion unit can qualify for up to eight street parking permits. "Denying all permits to residents of companion units while maintaining the current level of four permits for primary dwelling units would be legally problematic," the memo says, citing Equal Protection Clauses. In 2018, the city authorized more than 260 accessory dwelling units. Through May of this year, it has authorized an additional 119. Jennings says the increase is making it almost impossible for people to find street parking. "We have guests over, where are you going to park? You have to go, circle and circle around the block looking for parking," he said. Elliott's memo says the City Council can act on this issue.
