The Republican Party announced tonight that President Donald Trump will accept the GOP nomination for president in Jacksonville, Florida. The convention was originally planned for Charlotte, North Carolina. The party could not receive assurances from North Carolina's Democratic governor that a ban on mass gatherings would not be lifted in time for the convention. North Carolina, like a number of other states, have limited mass public gathering during the spread of COVID-19.“We are thrilled to hold @realDonaldTrump 's acceptance of the Republican nomination in the great city of Jacksonville!” GOP chairperson Ronna McDaniel tweeted. “Not only is Florida his home state, it is crucial to victory. We look forward to bringing this great celebration and economic boon to the Sunshine State!”The party said it will still hold a number of convention-related activities in Charlotte."Because the current North Carolina COVID-19 restrictions would not allow for the celebration to occur in Charlotte and Governor [Roy] Cooper would not work with the RNC to offer guidelines, the celebration of the nomination and the economic impact that goes with it must be moved to Jacksonville," the GOP said in a statement.Despite a rise in coronavirus cases in recent weeks in Florida, the state's Republican governor was eager to accept the relocated nomination."Florida is honored to host this special event where we will celebrate the re-nomination of President Donald J. Trump," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. "Jacksonville is a great city that will showcase Florida’s energy, facilities, entrepreneurship and commitment to bring together the delegates of the Republican Party at a historic time in our nation’s history." 1726

The U.S. decline in cigarette smoking could be stalling while the adult vaping rate appears to be rising, according to a government report released Thursday.About 14% of U.S adults were cigarette smokers last year, the third year in a row the annual survey found that rate. But health officials said a change in the methodology make it hard to compare that to the same 14% reported for 2017 and 2018.The adult smoking rate last saw a substantial drop in 2017, when it fell from 16% the year before. The new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mean there are more than 34 million adult smokers in the U.S.Meanwhile, about 4.5% of adults were counted as current e-cigarette users last year — about 11 million people. That rate appears to be up from 3.2% in 2018 and 2.8% in 2017. But again, officials said that comparing 2019 with earlier years is difficult because of the survey change. The CDC figures are based on responses from about 32,000 people.Health officials have long called tobacco use the nation’s leading cause of preventable disease and death.___The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded two earthquakes in Tennessee early Wednesday. The first happened at about 3:15a.m. and was reported to be a magnitude 4.4. The second was recorded at about 3:30a.m. and was a magnitude 3.3.According to the USGS Intensity map, as of 3:45a.m., more than 2000 people reported feeling the earthquakes across Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. Some people reported feeling weak shaking in areas of Middle Tennessee, like Hendersonville, Cookeville, and Murfreesboro. According to the National Weather Service office in Morristown, the largest earthquake on record in East Tennessee was a magnitude 4.7 near Marysville in 1973. The USGS?studied the reason why earthquakes are felt at much farther distances on the east coast, compared with earthquakes that hit the west coast. Researchers found that some factors have to do with tectonic plates and their geological history. The east coast has older rocks, which researchers said allow seismic waves "to cross them more effectively during an earthquake." 1084

The shortest day in what feels like the longest year has arrived. Monday is the Winter Solstice, the day each year when there is the least amount of sunshine in the Northern Hemisphere. The Winter Solstice is the official first day of winter, which lasts until March 20, 2021. It’s when the sun appears at its most southern position in the sky.If it has felt like the world has been getting darker and darker the last six months, that’s because it kind of has been. As the sun spent less and less time shining on the Northern Hemisphere. The closer a person is to the North Pole, the less time they will see the sun. People in Nome, Alaska will only have roughly 3 hours and 54 minutes of sunshine on Monday. There will now begin to be slightly more daylight each day until the Summer Solstice, which is on June 20, 2021.In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the opposite: it’s the day each year with the most sunshine and marks the beginning of summer in places like Australia, Argentina and South Africa. Many traditional celebrations on the solstice were canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Including at the world famous Stonehenge, where there is usually a large annual celebration on the solstices. 1222

The US officially relocated its Embassy to Jerusalem on Monday, formally upending decades of American foreign policy in a move that was met with clashes and protests along the Israeli-Gaza border. At least 43 Palestinians were killed in Gaza as deadly protests took place ahead of and during the ceremony in Jerusalem — making it the deadliest day there since the 2014 Gaza war.President Donald Trump did not attend the ceremony in Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood, but in a video message broadcast at the event he congratulated Israel, saying the opening had been "a long time coming.""Today, Jerusalem is the seam of Israel's government. It is the home of the Israeli legislature and the Israeli supreme court and Israel's prime minister and president. Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital, yet for many years, we failed to acknowledge the obvious, the plain reality that Israel's capital is Jerusalem," Trump said in the pre-recorded remarks. 1021
