The country's fast-developing tourism industry is expected to boost the hotel sector, a senior official has said.About 200,000 new hotels, resorts and guesthouses are likely to be built by 2015, head of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) Shao Qiwei said on Thursday.Addressing a seminar on domestic and international hotels' groups, he said the new structures will include about 10,000 star-rated hotels. The number of five-star hotels in the country is expected to rise from 361 to 500."The World Tourism Organization has forecast that China will grow into a huge tourism market, and have 100 million each of inbound and outbound visitors and 2.8 billion domestic tourists by 2015," he said.The booming tourism market has created the need for new hotels and other infrastructure facilities, he said.The Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts plan to open five new facilities in the country this year, and at least 13 more in big cities such Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an in the near future, the general manager of Traders Hotel at China World Trade Center in Beijing, Xin Tao, said.In fact, the group plans to open at least 40 new hotels in the country by 2011."The Olympic Games has brought us unlimited business opportunities and the increase of leisure, as well as business, travel in China will add to the appeal of hotel operators," she said.Investment from home and abroad into hotels will hit 340 billion yuan (.14 billion) between 2006 and 2010, the CNTA has forecast.The hotel sector was one of the first to be opened up in China, with Jianguo Hotel in Beijing being the first foreign-invested hotel to be approved by the State Council in 1979.Since then, 67 hotel brands of 41 international groups have entered the country and are managing 516 hotels at present, according to CNTA statistics.The hotel business has been expanding over the past three decades, and by the end of last year there were more than 14,000 star-rated hotels, 100 times more than in 1978.

China, with a record .2 trillion of foreign-exchange reserves, will keep the "bulk" of its US dollar holdings because the currency is one of safest investment options, a People's Bank of China assistant governor said. The dollar remains "important" because trade and foreign direct investment is conducted mostly in the currency, Yi Gang told delegates at a meeting that was closed to the media at the World Economic Forum in Singapore. Asian central banks will continue to hold most of their reserves in dollars, he said. "Safety, return and liquidity are the three most important elements that people should consider when they talk about reserves," Yi said in a recording of the discussion that was obtained by Bloomberg News. "As far as we're concerned, the serious reduction of the dollar reserve is a small probability," he said, adding that any adjustments to its dollar holdings will be "incremental." China's gross domestic product expanded 11.1 percent in the first quarter, making it the world's fastest-growing major economy, led by sustained demand for its exports to the US and other trading partners. Diversification of the nation's foreign-exchange reserves will be gradual and won't hurt the dollar or financial markets, Market News International said last month, citing Ding Zhijie, one of five advisers to the reserves agency's committee. 'Gradual Process' China's trade surplus, which the Asian Development Bank estimated will climb by 45 percent to a record 7 billion next year, has sparked calls for further gains in China's yuan. Some US lawmakers have said that the yuan was undervalued by 40 percent to make China's exports cheap and pledged trade sanctions as punishment. The central bank expects the yuan exchange rate will gradually move toward a "market-oriented direction," Yi told reporters after the meeting Monday. The currency has risen about 8.6 percent since the dollar link was abandoned in July 2005. "The central bank of China has the responsibility to keep the exchange rate at more or less a stable level," Yi said. "The mechanism is more toward a market-oriented direction."

BEIJING -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) has planned to open a subsidiary in the United States, as part of its going-global strategy which also involves Russia, Indonesia and the Middle East, Board Chairman Jiang Jianqing said here on Wednesday."Preparations have been going on smoothly. We hope to receive approval from American authorities as early as possible," said Jiang, a delegate to the ongoing 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, at a news briefing.Jiang said that next month the ICBC would open a branch in Russia and take over the Bank Halim in Indonesia. Applications to set up new branches in Dubai and Doha have been approved by the banking authorities of China, paving the way for its march into the emerging Middle East market.In its latest overseas expansion, the ICBC clinched an agreement with Seng Heng Bank Limited on August 29 to acquire a stake of nearly 80 percent of the bank in Macao for 4.683 billion patacas (US5 million), according to the bank's website.Jiang said that the ICBC would "cautiously" advance its going- global strategy. "Only when the price, opportunity and place are right will we make a move."The bank has established more than 100 branches so far in 13 countries and regions, mainly through greenfield investment, merger and acquisition. But overseas business only contributed three percent of its total assets and four percent of its profits. NANJING: Jiangsu province will constantly focus on environmental protection while maintaining strong momentum in economic development in the next five years, acting governor Luo Zhijun said in his work report to the first session of the 11th provincial people's congress on Friday.The province witnessed fast economic growth in the past five years with gross domestic product (GDP) increasing at an annual average rate of 14.5 percent, one of the highest rates in the country, official figures showed.However, such economic development has had a negative impact on the environment, Luo said.Workers try to clean a major moat of algae in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, last July. They grow easily in polluted waters and can starve the water of oxygen, killing aquatic life.The water quality of the lake has improved, but the incident was seen to have sent a signal to local government that the economy should not grow at the expense of the environment."We've learned a lesson from the incident, that environmental protection should take precedence over GDP growth," said Mao Xiaoping, mayor of Wuxi and deputy to the provincial congress.The provincial government will allocate more than 2 billion yuan (7 million) to clean up Taihu lake this year, Luo said in his report.Over the past five years, the provincial government has made strenuous efforts to protect the environment while speeding up economic development, Luo saidAll over the province, 2,713 small chemical factories, one of the main sources of pollution, have been ordered to close, while many other heavy polluting enterprises have been urged to upgrade their environmental protection facilities to be up to standards, Luo said.Similarly, 75 sewage treatment plants have been built in the cities with a daily disposal capacity of 3.78 million tons of wastewater, he said."We will continue to encourage technology renovation and push forward industrial restructuring in the next five years," said Luo.The authorities will also support research of technologies to improve water and air quality, Luo said.At the same time, the province will promote the use of energy-saving devices and recycling, he said.Measures are being taken to ensure that no new projects will be approved before they meet all requirements for environmental protection, Luo added.To that effect, the metallurgy, chemical, building materials, electrical power and textile industries will all be under close supervision, he said.

In each circle, it will always pass the two polars," said Wang Yejun, chief engineer of the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC).The round orbit is also the final destination of the probe, where it is supposed to start carrying out all the planned scientific exploration tasks.It was originally designed to stay on the orbit for one year, but a researcher estimated that fuel saved by smooth operations and precise maneuvers may prolong its life span.Chang'e-I, named after a legendary Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, blasted off on a Long March 3A carrier rocket on Oct. 24 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan Province.
