SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers over the weekend seized 314 pounds of narcotics and captured 14 fugitives.Officers intercepted 181 pounds of methamphetamine, 55 pounds of cocaine, 11 pounds of heroin, 31 pounds of fentanyl and 36 pounds of marijuana.RELATED: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seize 1,800 pounds of drugs worth .2 millionIt total, officials say the drugs are worth more than .4 million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - US Coast Guard officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend. They've launched Operation Dry Water to help cut down on the number of arrests for people boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol."We want everybody to have a great time and do it in a safe manner," says Lt. Commander Ellen Motoi, the Chief of Enforcement for the San Diego Sector of the Coast Guard."We're going to have a lot more boats out there from the local side, as well as Harbor Police. They'll be promoting safety and looking for boaters under the influence," says Motoi.Alcohol is the leading cause of boating accidents, according to the Coast Guard. They look for erratic speed, dangerous course headings and boats coming too close to other vessels as warning signs that someone may be drunk while operating a boat.Operation Dry Water is a nationwide program. In 2018, they made 494 BUI arrests and issued 7,305 other citations.Like driving, the legal limit for alcohol while operating a boat is .08. Anyone arrested for BUI could face jail time, a loss of their license/credentials and a hefty fine.Aside from BUI, Motoi says the emphasis of Operation Dry Water focuses on safety."It's not worth it," says Motoi. "We encourage everyone to think twice before you get on a boat."Motoi says the most common mistake people make is not to wear a life jacket. The Coast Guard says 80% of all drownings happen because people aren't wearing one.The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know they shouldn't shoot off flares or fireworks from their boats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While homes in California built after the mid-1970’s meet most seismic requirements, older homes can require significant upgrades to withstand a major earthquake. Moses Govea with Turnkey Contractors says the are required to upgrade older homes when they do renovations. It includes adding galvanized bolts to the foundation, forming sheer walls and adding metal braces to certain connection points. Geologist Pat Abbott said while viewing footage from the recent quake in Mexico he noticed the collapsed buildings likely were missing up-to-date joinery between the floors and walls. “As long as [the floor and walls] move as a unit, the structure is intact,” he said. The City of San Diego offers resources to check your home on their website. They also have information on renovations for unreinforced masonry buildings, typically built before 1933. 903

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego nursing homes are now dealing with positive cases of COVID-19. La Vida Real, an assisted living center in Rancho San Diego, confirmed to 10News that four of its staff members have tested positive for coronavirus.The facility is one of 32 owned by the Senior Resource Group. It’s the second local assisted living center to be hit with COVID-19. This Wednesday, San Diego County officials confirmed to 10News a positive case at Stellar Care Center, just south of the College Area. Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes keeps growing: In Kirkland, Washington, an outbreak at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths. In Louisiana, eleven deaths have now been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. In Mount Laurel, New Jersey, three patients at a nursing home have now died after testing positive.La Vida Real issued a statement to 10News, detailing how the company is handling the coronavirus cases:"La Vida Real has communicated with residents and their families, and is in close contact with San Diego County health officials, after learning that four staff members in our assisted living and memory care building tested positive for COVID-19. We are monitoring the situation closely and requiring all staff in the assisted living and memory care building to wear masks when inside the building and use personal protective equipment when interacting with residents showing any symptoms, per CDC guidelines.
