SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An attorney for a U.S. college student and her boyfriend who have been sentenced to four months in prison in the Cayman Islands for violating strict COVID-19 measures says he plans to appeal the recent ruling.Their attorney Jonathon Hughes says Skylar Mack, 18, of Georgia, and Vanjae Ramgeet, 24, of the Cayman Islands, have been in prison since Tuesday.He says he will argue for a less severe sentence next week and says the two have never been in trouble with the police.Mack is accused of breaking a mandatory two-week quarantine.Hughes told the Associated Press that on Nov. 27, Mack arrived in the Cayman Islands.But instead of undergoing a mandatory two-week quarantine, she broke quarantine by leaving with her boyfriend to attend a water sports event on Nov. 29, the AP reported.According to the AP, a judge ruled that Mack and Ramgeet pay a ,400 fine and provide 40 hours of community service. Ramgeet was also ordered to a two-month curfew, but prosecutors appealed, saying the punishment was lenient.On Dec. 15, a higher court ruled in favor of the prosecutors, and the couple was immediately imprisoned, the AP reported.Mack's grandmother told the AP that she emailed President Donald Trump and received a response saying the White House would look into it. 1309

(KGTV) — Hundreds gathered in Santee on Saturday to call for justice for women of color.A flyer for the march advertised "promoting black and brown unity" and justice for Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillén.Breonna Taylor was an EMT who was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant against her boyfriend at her home in March. No drugs were found in her apartment.Vanessa Guillén was a 20-year-old Army specialist who disappeared in April from Fort Hood in Texas. Remains believed to be hers were found near the Army post in July, sparking protests over the military's handling of sexual harassment allegations.A section of Mission Gorge Rd. was blocked off by police for the planned protest. Counter-demonstrators also assembled in the area.One of the demonstration's organizers told ABC 10News that they hope their calls for racial justice are heard by Santee's City Council leaders."Santee has its things, it's known as being racist, and I'm here to change that. That's the goal," said Alana, one of the organizers with East County BIPOC, who adds that she is born and raised in Santee. "We tried to work with City Council and we tried to be a part of a diversity committee, and it was kind of just brushed under the rug. (KGTV) — Four Congressmen, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas, and Mike Levin, participated in an all-access tour of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry Friday afternoon. Upon finishing the tour, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said sternly, “There is no crisis at the border. There is no justification for an emergency declaration at the border.” This was a direct contradiction to President Trump's reasoning to build a southern border wall. It has been almost one month since the Department of Homeland Security began implementing the new Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). The policy forces migrants from Central and South America entering the United States without papers, or those claiming asylum, to in Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings. According to the Mexican Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice, Tijuana has the fifth highest murder rate in the world. Because of that, Representative Juan Vargas (CA-51-D) strongly rejected MPP.“To be sent back to a place like Tijuana, where they don’t have family, friends, where they don’t have the social connections to be helped and to be safe, I don’t think we should be doing it. I think it is the wrong thing to do. I don’t think it’s our American values," said Vargas.Previous to the new MPP, migrants were released into the United States after their initial process, under the assumption they would return to US Immigration Court at a later time to receive their final status. But Homeland Security said that too many migrants would skip court, and disappear into the US as fugitives. That’s a better percentage than the people who show up who are on parole in the United States of America for crimes,” Representative Hoyer said. After touring the facility, the Democrats agreed, solving the immigration issue is not as simple as building a physical wall. Overcrowding the ports with seemingly endless asylum seekers is not the answer either. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the U.S. is considering a ban on Chinese social media apps, including the wildly popular short video platform TikTok.In an interview Monday with Fox News' Laura Ingraham, Pompeo said people should only download the app if they want their private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company based in Beijing.
