SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested a domestic violence suspect Friday morning after a standoff in La Mesa that temporarily blocked access to parts of Grossmont Center. The La Mesa and San Diego police departments responded to the situation at Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive just before 8 a.m. Both streets were closed as officers worked to detain the suspect, La Mesa Police reported in a tweet.The situation started Thursday night when police received a call from the victim, saying she was choked by her ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 6800 block of Hyde Park Drive, San Diego police said.Police responded about 7:20 p.m. but the suspect already had fled in the girlfriend's car. Officers took a crime report and the victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa as a precautionary measure.The suspect returned to the residence this morning and the victim called the police again, according to SDPD. The suspect then drove to Grossmont Center, where police found him around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was arrested at 8:19 a.m. and taken into custody.The streets in the area were reopened around 8:30 a.m., SDPD said. 1145

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pride Live, the online pride parade and festival, kicked off a day-long event today featuring elected officials, community organizations and businesses.Because of the pandemic, organizers took the historic Pride Parade march through Hillcrest online -- sdpride.org/live/ -- and began at 10 a.m. with a slide show of photos from 46 years of the parade, which started in 1974. The San Diego Women's Chorus followed with a virtual singing of the national anthem. An interfaith blessing, with clergy from various denominations, gave their blessings.In 1994, the San Diego Women Motorcycle Riders first appeared to officially kick off the parade, which usually had about 350,000 participants and 200 pride floats, along with 400 volunteers.This year, about 12 motorcycles from the group took off from the site of the Hillcrest pride flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. Kamala Harris questioned U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan on the economic fallout of last month's nearly six-hour closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday in Washington, D.C. CBP fully closed the San Ysidro Port of Entry to vehicles from 11:30 a.m. to around 5 p.m. Nov 25 after a group of asylum-seeking members of the migrant caravans in Tijuana attempted to cross the border and illegally enter the U.S. CBP agents used tear gas and pepper ball guns to quell the crowds. According to Harris' office, businesses in the city of San Ysidro lost .3 million due to the closure. Roughly 5 billion in annual gross regional product in San Diego and Imperial counties is reliant on interborder commerce. ``You can appreciate that there's a lot of concern in that part of our state from business owners, especially when the president has threatened to `permanently close the border,' that there would be real economic harm to that region,'' Harris said. According to McAleenan, the agency remains in daily contact with the San Diego Association of Governments and the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce regarding the closure and its economic effects. The CBP is also conducting a review of the incident, which McAleenan said happens after every use of force. ``I personally wrote into our operational plan the need to maximize legitimate trade and travel while we made sure that any caravan arrival would be managed in a safe way, so I delegated that authority to the lead field coordinator in San Diego area,'' McAleenan said. ``They actually opened it up a little bit before they felt that we had full resolution, because they thought it was a secure enough situation. And they worked very hard to catch up on the traffic backlogs.'' Harris also requested data from the CBP on how many migrants the agency has referred for prosecution for trafficking allegations. Federal officials, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, have suggested that a significant number of migrants pose as so-called ``fraudulent families'' in order to gain asylum.
