SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Utah family that ordered free coronavirus masks through a state program say they were sent politically-charged face coverings featuring a handgun and a controversial slogan.Christine Passey-Spencer of Rose Park says she ordered the masks through a sate program, "A Mask for Every Utahn." Since April, the campaign has used federal COVID-19 money to purchase more than 2 million masks from local and international manufacturers to limit the spread of the virus."I was just shocked," Passey-Spencer said.The two masks feature an American flag with a handgun printed across the front. The face coverings also feature the slogan "Don't Tread on Me," written below a coiled rattlesnake."I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this, and this is very politically-charged speech," Passey-Spencer said.The Gadsden Flag — the inspiration for the snake and "Don't Tread on Me" slogan — was first used in the Revolutionary War. But in recent years, the image has been co-opted by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists. In 2016, it was deemed to have "racially-tinged" messaging in some contexts by the federal government. More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights."We hope this is an isolated incident; that we just missed these couple of masks," said Ben Hart, who oversees Utah's mask program for the Governor's Office of Economic Development.Hart admits about 100 of the "Don't Tread on Me" masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them "inappropriate" and attempted to set all of them aside."We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks. SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Planning Commission advanced a plan Thursday that would make the Midway District more vibrant by adding housing, commercial projects and parks.The plan would grow the area’s housing from 2,000 to 11,000 over the next 20 years. Business development in the area would also generate a similar number of jobs.The district would also boast nearly 30 acres of parks. "We think it's an important opportunity to provide for the park needs of the community," project manager Vickie White said.The parks would all fit into an improved pedestrian and bile network that would make use of existing transit infrastructure. The city hopes the network would reduce the area’s reliance on cars."We're focused on creating comfortable connections along transit corridors to make this a more appealing area to walk or bike -- we see a lot off opportunities for modal increase in this area," White said.Reducing reliance on cars also complies with a citywide climate action plan. "If there's one real, glaring problem with this community it's a lack of connectivity from district to district," Commissioner William Hofman said.The area around sports arena and Valley View Casino Center would also get additional streets and paths.The plan includes a variety of possibilities for the sports arena including operating it as is or demolishing it and pushing for other land-use opportunities.The plan will now go to the City Council’s Smart Growth and Land Use Committee in May. 1493

SALT LAKE CITY — A pair of best friends who met while studying at Utah Valley University are taking a long, unique journey to deliver a message of peace.James Alan Thompson of Sandy and his friend Paul T. Chavez are walking across the United States.Their journey began on June 24 in San Francisco. They hope to complete the 3,000-mile journey in Washington, D.C., by December.They were inspired to make the trek after seeing civil unrest and protests erupt across the country.“What is it we can do to make an impact, instead of just complaining about what’s going on,” Thompson said. “Talk to people in person and talk to them about how they have received kindness in their lives."The friends hope that by connecting with individuals from all walks of life and from all over the country, they can show there is much more that unites people than divides.“It’s touching one life at a time, one day at a time,” Chavez said. “We are opening up a space for this conversation about peace.”“There are good people in this country. This country is not as divided as some think it is,” Thompson said.Thompson and Chavez are walking about 20 miles per day. They expect to pass through Utah sometime in August.“Once we reach Salt Lake City we will do a day of kindness where we bring people together. Earnest entered the plea a week after a grand jury returned a 113-count indictment that largely mirrors a complaint filed shortly after his arrest on April 27. The indictment added four counts of using and carrying a firearm during commission of a violent crime.Earnest's parents attended the brief hearing but did not seem to exchange eye contact with their 19-year-old son. The suspect spoke only once, to acknowledge his name.Two days after the shooting, the family said their son's actions "were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold.""To our great shame, he is now part of the history of evil that has been perpetrated on Jewish people for centuries," they said in their only public statement since the shooting.Earnest looked blankly ahead as one of his attorneys argued that shackles should be removed from his wrists, ankles and waist during the hearing. Peter Ko, a prosecutor, countered, "He tried to commit mass murder," and the judge, Michael Berg, denied the defense request.Earnest also faces charges of murder and attempted murder for the attack on Chabad of Poway on the last day of Passover.
