The report came on the same day that the House Homeland Security committee chair sent a letter to the Secret Service recommending protection for the candidates. In 2017, the Secret Service spelled out guidelines on when candidates would receive protection. The criteria spells out that a de facto party nominee and running mate would receive protection. Protection could also be extended to candidates based on standing in the polls and threats against the candidate. On Tuesday, Biden's rally was interrupted when two protesters jumped onto the stage. It’s all in support of Terell Jensen, an 18-year-old who is now paralyzed in his hands and legs after a sledding accident.The last time he could walk and fully use his hands was Nov. 24, when his family was out near Strawberry Reservoir looking for their Christmas tree. “I was being pulled behind an ATV and I just got flung and went into the little ditch,” Terell said. Hitting his back on a rock, the accident left him paralyzed. “Mentally, it’s really tough sometimes, and you really have to push yourself to stay positive,” he said. Kari Jensen, Terell's mother, said it was a miracle they had cellphone service when the accident happened and that the helicopter was able to pick her son up. 698
With protests erupting across the country during the pandemic and some calling to defund the police, many people are now looking for new ways to stay safe.“When people start getting stretched and they’re already living on the ends, at what point do you start seeing good people make bad decisions,” said Mark James, owner of Panther Protection Services, a private security company in Atlanta, Georgia.His bodyguard services have increased 40% in the past four months, while the firearms training that he offers has increased more than 300% in the same time frame.“People who have never been gun owners before are now buying guns,” he said. “Those people who are buying guns are saying, ‘I have to learn how to use a gun that I just bought for my own personal protection.’”This increase in private security is happening across the country.“Bodyguard services went up at least 100% since this whole COVID-19 era has started, along with some of the racial tensions that are going on,” said Dexter Ravenell, owner of Around the Clock Security in North Carolina.For the past few months, Ravenell has been getting requests from all kinds of people.“From Blacks, whites, Hispanics, male, female,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this as far as the demand that we are getting.”The cost for Ravenell’s services starts at per hour and goes up from there.“It’s good for business but morally it’s kind of sad to see that we’re coming to that now,” he said.James wouldn’t tell us how much he charges but did give some safety tips for free.“I always walk wide to make sure there’s no one on the other side of my vehicle,” he said.James says the best safety advice he can offer is situational awareness.“I’m always looking at the small things which keep me from having to do big things,” he said. 1801
Workers have a right to safety by law, but an advocacy group claims its new report proves those laws aren't being enforced.The National Employment Law Project (NELP) analyzed data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) from April to early August and found more than 1,700 workers filed complaints, saying their employers retaliated against them for raising coronavirus safety concerns.NELP tells us they've even heard from workers who asked for masks and were fired. More than half of the complaints were dismissed without investigation, while 2% were investigated and resolved by OSHA.“Instead of an agency that's there to assure that workers have a safe workplace, it's there to assure that you know large employers that want to violate the law that they get off the hook,” said Debbie Berkowitz, Director of the NELP Worker Health and Safety Program.Berkowitz is one of the authors of the report. She worked at OSHA under the Obama administration. She says the agency should've acted with “emergency temporary standards” for safety during the pandemic.“But instead, the administration has done almost no enforcement in this pandemic to protect workers against employers that flagrantly violate the CDC guidelines, because they're just guidelines, they're not mandatory,” said Berkowitz.Berkowitz thinks there would be more complaints if workers felt protected.If you are punished for speaking up, she says you should still file a complaint with OSHA within 30 days. Even if it's dismissed, she's still advocating for people to share their stories.“We need to understand what working people are facing, especially our essential workers who are working outside of the home, and we need to make sure that we're protecting these workers,” said Berkowitz.In a statement to The Washington Post, OSHA said it's committed to these investigations.
