So as one robot learns in a different part of the country or a different region, it also educates all the other robots so they’re constantly getting smarter,” Griffith said.However, the robot doesn’t work alone.“You could say these are the co-workers of our robot,” Griffith said as he passed human workers.Humans are still needed in the recycling process, but the robot has been able to take on sorting challenges that would otherwise be unsafe for people.“For obvious reasons, they don’t really mind getting stuck with hypodermic needles, or sifting through all the nasty stuff that ends up in the recycling like diapers, and so we can help move the manual sorter further away from these hazards,” Horowitz said.The robot at GFL Environmental is focusing its efforts on picking out items like milk jugs, coffee cups and margarine tubs. The materials were formerly considered trash, but now they can be put to valuable use and sold somewhere as another recyclable.“Our goal is to maximize the breadth of the recycling program, and by doing so, divert as much waste from the landfills into valuable purposes as possible,” Griffith said.Thanks to the robots, GFL Environmental is one of the first in the nation to recycle coffee cups. As more robots continue to deploy across the country, it’s clear artificial intelligence is helping to transform the recycling industry. Matanya says they’re efficient workers, but they’re also providing more transparency and data in the industry that has been historically difficult to obtain until now.“There hasn’t really been a sensor, or any means of automatically detecting how well things are working, where things are breaking down, where materials are ending up in the wrong spot. Next semester, she’ll be the first in her family to graduate college and not with just one degree, but two."I got the scholarship and it just kind of gave me the opportunity to actually go," said Hixson.ISU sophomore Cinestie Olson battled through depression and anxiety to become a Hixson scholar. "That was really difficult to go through so I just had to keep reminding myself you know keep going, you have college ahead of you, like you can totally change your life after this."Perhaps most interesting is that Hixson inherited the seed money for the foundation from her boss, businessman and philanthropist Ernst F. Lied. He died without heirs or instructions on what she was to do with the money."I hope he would be pleased with what we've done," said Hixson.A small box of notecards helps keep track of just how much money she's donated to a handful of colleges and universities. His mom told CNN that Logan's physical therapist suggested a gait trainer to help him with walking, but they did not think insurance would cover it and wondered whether it would arrive in a reasonable time.So she and her husband turned to YouTube, where they found a tutorial to make one out of PVC pipe."I found a video that looked pretty easy and got the list and took it to Home Depot to see if they had everything we needed," Christian Moore said.When they arrived, she asked a store employee she knew if anyone could help them with the supply list. She was met by a store manager and another employee who came to help."They started getting the parts together and told us they would put it together and would not charge us for it," she said. IRVING, Texas – A cable man is accused of stabbing an 83-year-old woman to death in her Texas home. Officers with the Irving Police Department found the woman, Betty Thomas, dead in her home at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. “Upon arrival, officers discovered 83-year-old Betty Thomas deceased from multiple stab wounds,” said Media Relations Officer Robert Reeves. The next day, police say they arrested 43-year-old Roy James Holden Jr. in Mesquite, Texas, and charged him with capital murder in connection with Thomas’ death. “We do know that the suspect worked for a utility service provider and that is how he knew Miss Thomas,” said Reeves.
