LANZHOU, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Nitric acid that spilled from a crashed truck in a northwest Chinese city Monday has caused no contamination of the Yellow River -- China's second longest river, local officials said.Workers had cleaned up tons of acid that entered a roadside drain in a four-hour operation after the accident in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, said a spokesman of a work crew tasked to clean up the chemical.Tests show the spill did not pollute the environment near the Yellow River, he said.Officials with the city environmental protection bureau said they would keep monitoring the water quality of the Yellow River.A truck carrying 14 tonnes of nitric acid overturned and caught fire on Liuzhong Highway near Lanzhou at noon on Monday. One driver was killed while the other was seriously injured.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A senior official from China's Ministry of Commerce called for enhanced trade and economic cooperation between China and the European Union (EU), prior to Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's upcoming visit to three EU nations.In a recent interview with the People's Daily, Ministry of Commerce International Trade Representative Gao Hucheng reviewed the current trade and economic relationship between China and the EU, pinpointing the areas where more efforts could be made on both sides to further cooperation.In an article published in Wednesday's People's Daily, Gao said that in the past 35 years since China and the EU forged diplomatic ties, the relations between the two sides went from "constructive partnership" to "comprehensive partnership" and the now "comprehensive strategic partnership."The article was published about a week before Vice Premier Li sets out to visit Spain, Germany and Britain on Jan. 4-12.Trade between China and the European Union has become one of the most active and influential bilateral relations in the world, said Gao.Leaders of China and the European Union have been exchanging official visits frequently, said he. This year alone, seven of top Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, paid official visits to over a dozen EU countries.Meanwhile, some 65 high-level delegations from the EU and its member states visited China in 2010.Trade cooperation between China and the EU has been speeding up, Gao said. BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices declined at a faster rate last week as weather remained good and local governments stepped up efforts to ensure supplies.According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Tuesday, the prices of 18 types of vegetables for the week ending November 21 declined 2.6 percent from the previous week, and the pace of the fall accelerated from the previous week's 0.8 percent.The ministry said that radishes, cucumbers and celery were among the vegetables that witnessed the largest fall in prices, dropping 11.1 percent, 10 percent and 7 percent respectively week-on-week.This was good news for the Chinese government as it strove to ease inflation and keep rising prices in check.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation, surged to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. Food prices, which account for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate the CPI, soared 10.1 percent last month.However, according to the MOC report, China's meat and cooking oil prices during the period of November 15-21 edged up because of rising demand. Prices of pork and beef rose 2.2 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, week-on-week.
