SAN DIEGO - San Diego Democrats are now celebrating their party officially taking back the House of Representatives.Now, they want action on a bill they say will take corruption out of U.S. politics."Having the Democrats take back the house is the best birthday present anybody could have," said Ruth Kirk, who lives in Hillcrest. On Thursday, Kirk celebrated with about three dozen of her like minded friends - in front of Democratic Congresswoman Susan Davis's office in North Park. The demonstrators, part of a group called Indivisible, worked to flip house seats from red to blue in the 2018 election. With that goal accomplished, Indivisible is turning its attention to reforming how politics operate in this country. Indivisible held rallies outside Davis's office as well as Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter's Temecula headquarters. They are pushing for H.R. 1 - a bill that would reform campaign finance laws, ethics, and voting rights."We want to get the money and the gerrymandering out of politics and the ethics back into government," Kirk said. Davis says the bill is still being drafted and hopes to have it passed by Jan. 21. That's the eighth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which freed corporations and unions to spend all they want on political ads. It appears, however, to have a minuscule chance in the Republican-controlled senate. Majority leader Mitch McConnell last month called it a blatantly unconstitutional effort to micromanage our elections. Political analyst Ruben Barrales, who worked in the George W. Bush administration, says there are some aspects of the bill that could pass - such as more daylight for campaign contributions. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A blaze broke out Tuesday morning at an unoccupied Mira Mesa house being used as a preschool and caused an estimated 0,000 in damage, authorities said.The fire was reported shortly after 2:15 a.m. at a single-story on Gold Coast Drive near Westonhill Drive, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews responded to the scene and found flames fueled by a gas line on the outside of the home, the agency reported.The flames spread to the garage, attic and portions of the house before firefighters knocked down the flames within 45 minutes, fire officials said. No injuries were reported and the flames did not spread to any nearby homes.Video from the scene showed firefighters cutting their way into a garage to access the house. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego High School teacher who sexually and physically assaulted an underage female student pleaded guilty to 11 felonies Tuesday, including lewd acts on a child and assault.Juan Carlos Herrera, 49, formerly a special needs curriculum instructor, is slated to be sentenced to 10 years in state prison next month for assaulting the unidentified victim "on almost a daily basis" between February 2018 and March of this year, when the girl was 15 and 16 years old, according to Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto.His plea agreement includes lifetime registration as a sex offender and a strike offense for his plea to a dissuading a witness count for threatening the girl if she told anyone about what happened.RELATED: SDHS teacher accused of having sex with student represents himself in courtIn addition to the sexual assaults, Herrera threatened to cut the girl's arms and legs off if she told anyone what was going on, choked her and threw her on the ground, according to the prosecutor.The crimes occurred in his classroom, his car and at a hotel, prosecutors said.The prosecutor said the girl was a San Diego High School student, but is not a special needs student and was not one of Herrera's students."This case involves emotional manipulation by the defendant, who was verbally abusive and coercive towards the victim in this case, who was particularly vulnerable, as (Herrera) took advantage of information he knew about her background and used it to manipulate her," Coto said following his May arraignment.The investigation into Herrera began earlier this year, when the victim's mother reported finding suspicious and concerning text messages from Herrera on the girl's cellphone, SDPD Lt.
